The Moravia region
South Moravia is a region with a wide range of cultural and historical examples with beautiful countryside landscapes; Architecture movements and architects had left great examples which now recognized as excellences by the historians.
Two of these, Villa Tugendhat in Brno and Lednice–Valtice, have been placed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List. On the countryside UNESCO has put under protection two bio- areas in the region – Dolní Morava and the White Carpathian Mountains.
The Dyje Basin, one of the Czech Republic’s four national parks, is also found here. The other protected landscape area, the Moravian Karst in the north of Brno, offers the view of extensive systems of stalactites as the Macocha Gorge caves. the site of the Battle of the Three Emperors in Slavkov or Austerlitz, is among world-famous historical sites.
The mammoth has left their footprints in Dolní Vestonice (famous archaeological site), at the dawn of human history while other archaeological sites (Mikulcice for example) testify the fame and fortune of the Great Moravian Empire.
Else to cultural monuments and areas of natural beauty, South Moravia living traditions and the warmth hospitality of its people marks a reputable attraction. Its folklore, music, dance, language, folk costumes, applied art and craft work, is no mere show for tourists, but a real part of everyday life of this region.
Extensive cycle paths as the popular wine’s one, offer a unique way of getting in contact with nature and to discover the South Moravian vineyards with their typical wine cellars. Cars and motorbikes race at Masaryk Circuit, including an annual race in the world motorbike championship calendar, attract fans and lovers of race emotions.
The region enjoys excellent transport links and a strategic position on the intersection of trans-European long-distance road and rail routes – important arteries connecting the west of Europe with the east, and the north with the south.
Brno area
Even though Brno is widely known as an industrial city, it is a vibrant and historic city with a character all its own. Only a two-hour drive from Prague, it’s worth spending some time here to see the city’s abundance of empire and neo-classical buildings.
It offers many possibilities of cultural enjoyment in its numerous theatres, museums, cinemas and clubs. The Brno Exhibition Centre with its eighty-year tradition is a venue of many international trade fairs, exhibitions and congresses, and as such plays a significant role in the social and economic life of the whole city.
The City of Brno regularly holds various cultural events and festivals as the "Brno - City in the Centre of Europe" associated with a fireworks competition "Ignis Brunensis" or the traditional Christmas market held in the main city square.
On a tour of the city don’t miss Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral, sitting atop a hill overlooking the city on Petrská Street. The cathedral was built in the late 11th and early 13th centuries. Further a field, and further up the hill is probably Brno’s greatest treasure, Spilberk Castle, built in the 13th century, it has been both a Prussian fortress and Nazi dungeon.
There are plenty of interesting sights in the pedestrian-friendly old town. Noteworthy are the Brno Dragon and the Wagon Wheel. The ’dragon’ hanging from the ceiling is in actuality an alligator given to the city by Arch prince Matayás in 1608. The giant Wagon Wheel reflects Brno’s industrial strength.
In The old town its easy to find traditional and European type of food restaurants, as well as pubs and discos. In close proximity to Brno and within 100 km. circle you can reach Vienna and Bratislava, served every hour by trains and buses, as much as Prague who distance of 250 km.
