About the home

There are two double bedrooms(including one twin) and a further dressing room containing an extra put-you-up. There is a large toilet/shower room.

The lounge is beamed with tiled floor, traditional French furniture throughout - Sat. TV, and wood burning stove in the lounge . There are heaters provided for winter lets. There is a good size modern kitchen/diner opening into an old barn.

Double room

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region

We are in the Charente Maritime with easy reach of beautiful clean Atlantic sandy beaches; we are surrounded by old Roman towns, chateaux, local markets twice a week with sparkling seafood and local produce, fields of sunflowers, vineyards with the majestic River Charente making its way through attractive countryside.

We are about one hour (traffic permitting) from La Rochelle (look out for cheap flights and rent a car), the beautiful islands and some superb beaches. Our nearest lovely beach is at Royan only 30 minutes away and interested auctions are held every Saturday.

Colourful markets selling country produce and of course sea food, are never far away. Your cottage is only 15 minutes from the old Roman towns of Cognac to the east, Saintes to the south and St. Jean d’Angeley to northwest. The cottage is only 8-10mins walk from the village shops; supermarkets, post office, tobacconist, doctor, dentist and masseur.

The Brizambourg area

Visitors are shown round many of the brandy houses in Cognac with boat rides on the Charente which runs through the town; there are various golf clubs in the vicinity along with horse riding and tennis courts. Brochures providing information on local attractions are left in the house. Saintes, Cognac and St Jean d'Angeley are three attractive Roman towns within a 10mile radius of the cottage and they have big supermarkets, cinemas and antique shops to tempt you.

The wide Charente river runs through this part and there are many fine places on the banks of the Charente, Seugne or Boutonne, where you can have a romantic dinner, go boating, walking, cycling or just drive and admire the fascinating scenery. There are some lovely old chateaux, historical monuments and pedestrian precints.

Enter into the friendly spirit of the surrounding villages, where at the slightest excuse parties are held, for example, by the local football team or the local fire brigade, in the village Salle de Fete which go on the small hours sometimes. Experience the Fete and Festivals which add interest and beauty to the towns and villages around you. If you are around on 14 July (Bastille Day) there are dozens of celebrations and fireworks in the villages close to you.

Bring your laptop as there are internet cafes and supermarkets have free WIFI.

You can fly into La Rochelle/Bordeaux, use EuroStar/TGV and rent a car. National Express run a coach directly to Saintes. Driving your car from UK is easy and enjoyable.

Detailed instructions will follow but to find where we are on the map, look for the A10 Paris/Bordeaux road and exit at St. Jean d’Angeley go to south on N150, to St. Hilaire de Villefranche where you go to east on D731 - the village of Brizambourg is a 6 kms along this road, which also leads directly to Cognac.
