About this location

The English Riviera region

Torbay is famous for its mild climate and frequently goes by the name of the 'English Riviera'. This makes it the ideal place to take a holiday at any time of year. Brixham has been a charming and picturesque fishing port for centuries, this story is told so well in Brixhams Heritage Museum. It was in Brixham harbour that Prince William of Orange landed in 1688 before marching to London to be crowned King William III. In the harbour today there is a replica of Sir Francis Drake's famous ship the Golden Hind, which is open for the public to go aboard.

Brixham has many attractive winding , narrow streets with colourful cottages, a wide selection of shops, an art gallery, craft shops and numerous cafes, restaurants, pubs and churches. There is a very popular open-air, sea water swimming pool surrounded by a shingle and rock beach which is excellent for rock-pooling. Brixhams other beaches are a mixture of sand, shingle and large pebble. Nearby are the beautiful sandy beaches of Broadsands, Goodrington and Paignton all of which are very clean and safe for swimming.

Close to Brixham is Paignton Zoo with its many exotic and endangered species, the new 'Living Coasts' attraction at Torquay, Kents Cavern prehistoric caves, Babbacombe Model Village and Quaywest Waterpark at Goodrington Sands which has the highest and fastest flume in the country. Other attractions in the area include water sports, quad bikes, go-kart racing, cycling, golf, tennis, horse riding, fishing, and adventure parks.
