Cottage | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 5
on the edge of Brixham, 5 minutes' walk from Fishcombe Cove (coarse sand, café), a 1920s, semi-detached family house with beautiful sea views across allotments to Torbay. A much loved, owner-enjoyed house. Inside, comfortable and unpretentious. Small area of garden at the front and, behind, an enclosed, pretty, partly lawned garden with peach tree, decking (seats) and two patios (table/chairs, gas barbecue); you are welcome to harvest herbs and rhubarb, raspberries and apples in season. Glazed porch to good-sized hall (beautiful original stained glass doors) and living room with original ornamental fireplace, bay window, TV/Blu-ray. Fitted kitchen (dishwasher, washing machine, tumble drier, microwave) with breakfast table. Cloakroom (loo, washbasin). Separate dining room (piano) with door to garden; garden room with armchairs and garden views and door to patio. Upstairs (stairgates), three bedrooms – at the front, a twin (bay window, TV/DVD) and a single, both with lovely coastal views; and to the rear, a double with views over the garden to Brixham beyond. Bathroom (suite with separate shower). Public children's play area, 200 yards. About 4 minute walk to coastal path (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) which leads in about an hour to Broadsands' sandy beach (café); 2½ miles by car. A good family property in a great location.

The West Country region
Torbay and the Red Cliffs: Napoleon declared Torquay “beau” when he saw it from the sea (true, he was a prisoner and there wasn't much of it then), and certainly it could be in the south of France when, in the sunshine, you look down from most of its seven hills on the expensive boats in its harbour/marina, windsurfers and water-skiers skimming its bay, and palm trees, very well-kept public lawns and flower beds and posh-looking hotels lining its seafront behind a sandy beach. People play bowls in white clothes. The exotic impression fades in its streets, but name a likely resort facility, sport or amusement and you can bet Torquay will have it, as well as some fine houses on its hills.
The three towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham surround a very beautiful bay and make up the West Country's largest resort. Paignton, less glamorous-looking than Torquay, has red cliffs and sand and an excellent zoo. Brixham is the fishing port, with still attractive harbour and tiers of coloured houses around it. There are several sandy beaches, and boat trips across the bay and round Berry Head (lighthouse) to Dartmouth.
North of Torquay is a mainly cliff-coast to the boat-filled mouth of the long, broad river Teign estuary (Teignmouth). Above Teignmouth, its good golf course has wonderful views both inland to Dartmoor and out to sea. The best route to Exeter and places east is via it and the A380 – not the coast road which is mainly ribbon-developed, slow and dull. The most beautiful route of all is by the mainline railway (Brunel designed) which for much of the way between Newton Abbot and Exeter hugs the shore.
Brixham: Torbay's fishing port: beautiful busy harbour, fish market, fishermen's cottages, shops, fish restaurant (harbour views), deli. Lots of beaches nearby (Goodrington Sands and Broadsands, 3 miles); indoor and open-air (sea) swimming pools, yacht marina. Cliff walks to Mansands' sandy beach, 4 miles, and Kingswear, 8. Boats for hire. Steam railway. Ferry to Torbay or Dartmouth (town). Excellent bus service to Exeter and around Torbay. Golf, 2 miles. Torquay, 7.
