It offers visitors a traditional, comfortable and fully equipped cottage with much character and peaceful country views from every room. The West Country / Devon region
Devon is renowned primarily for its natural beauty, coastline and Dartmoor National park. South Devon in particular, with its temperate climate, offers the best of all worlds with easy access to all the nearby attractions with many other attractions such as the Eden Project in Cornwall within driving distance.
The Brixham / Galmpton area
The estuary river Dart from the mouth at Dartmouth flows - within the immediate area - past Greenway, Galmpton Creek, Stoke Gabriel to Totnes (and beyond) and offers glorious views, boating facilities as well as relaxing ferry rides between Dartmouth and Totnes. Dartmouth can also be reached via car ferry at Kingswear about 5 miles from the cottage and boasts excellent restaurants and markets. Torquay, Brixham and Paignton also offer many boat trips and nautical activities, great shopping and restaurants. The ancient historic town of Totnes offers 2 weekly markets, ferry boat and steam railway trips to Dartmouth, very interesting shops, riverside restaurants and tea rooms. Children are very well catered for throughout the whole area with Paignton Zoo, The South Devon Steam Railway, water parks, GoKarts and Krazy Golf, museums etc..
The National Trust's Greenway Gardens is near Galmpton by the river and Collaton Fishacre is very close by too. A small passenger ferry boat at Greenway will take you across the Dart over to Dittisham where you can enjoy a meal or a drink at the Ferry Boat Inn while the children practice their crabbing skills off the small pier. A large bell summons the ferry from the other side for the return journey! In August there are fantastic Regattas in Torquay and Dartmouth, with the Red Arrows flying centrestage.
The Blueflag awarded sandy beach at Broadsands is the nearest beach at just over a mile from the cottage as are coastal paths and cliff top walks, with magnificent panoramic seaviews to Elberry Cove and beyond as far as Brixham, which is approx. 3 miles.
There is a nearby fishing and a golf course at Churston and further afield at Dartmouth Country Club
For lucky dogs there are beaches nearby that allow dogs even during the high season at Goodrington Sands and Elberry Cove - see picture in photo gallery above.

We stayed at Phyllis's lovely cottage for a week and had everything we could possibly need. The cottage has a lovely room for my son overlooking the fields and ponies and the main bedroom is ample size and very cosy. Phyllis is an excellent host and made us feel extremely welcome to the point that we really fell in love with her property! Barnacle cottage is unique,a special place to stay and I highly recommend staying there |

Lovely cottage - excellent facilities - in a gorgeous location. The cottage looks out over open fields and has a large, private garden for guests to use. Galmpton is a very pretty village - there is a local shop/post office and a very nice pub a short walk away. Even lack of sunshine didn't spoil our stay there - plenty to do/see in the vicinity without having to spend half the day driving. Well appointed kitchen - induction hob, freezer, fridge and microwave so no need to eat out - unless you want to. The cottage was clean, cosy and the bed extremely comfortable and has a flat screen TV and two sofas to relax in the evening after a hard day's exploring the many places of interest. We went somewhere different every day. We took our Samoyed dog with us - dogs are welcome almost everywhere - lots of lovely places to walk, or sit and just admire the glorious scenery. The only down-side was having to leave. We were welcomed by Phyllis, the owner, with a delicious cream tea and locally produced jam (I discovered you can buy it at the local store - a short walk away - so I stocked up before heading home!) She could not have been more helpful - a really lovely lady. Brixham is a delightful little fishing village - and everyone was very friendly. A truly memorable, restful and relaxing holiday. Cannot wait to stay there again. |

We had a wonderful short stay in October. Our lovely hostess/landlady even managed to arrange beautiful weather for us. A welcoming touch was the Devonshire tea with lovely local jam waiting for us... more |
