Barnacle Cottage
About the home
Barnacle Cottage is located on the edge of the picturesque village of Galmpton by the River Dart and a mile from Broadsands beach. It offers visitors a traditional, cosy and fully equipped cottage with much character and peaceful rural views from every room. The ground floor with oak flooring is open plan and incorporates a comfortable seating area with 2 sofas, a modern kitchen with dishwasher and a dining area for 4/6 people. A turning wooden staircase leads upstairs to the bathroom, double and single bedrooms. There is satelite TV with a second TV upstairs in the master bedroom.
Out of the village is The National Trust 's Greenway Gardens, set on the banks of the River Dart with stunning views and garden walks. Greenway House was once home to Agatha Christie and the much awaited and newly refurbished house was opened to the public in 2009.. The area offers much in the way of nautical activities in Brixham (3km) and Dartmouth (6km) magnificent coastal walks, easy access to Dartmoor and South Hams' glorious beaches. Ideal for couples and families. Paignton Zoo is closeby as are many other activities for children. The ancient market town of Totnes is about 6 miles away and offers a weekly market, outstanding shopping, riverside restaurants/tearooms etc. There are boat cruises, steam railways, vineyards and lots of historical interest in the area.

The West Country / Devon region

Devon is renowned primarily for its natural beauty, coastline and Dartmoor National park. South Devon in particular, with its temperate climate, offers the best of all worlds with easy access to all the nearby attractions with many other attractions such as the Eden Project in Cornwall within driving distance.
The Brixham / Galmpton area
The estuary river Dart from the mouth at Dartmouth flows - within the immediate area - past Greenway, Galmpton Creek, Stoke Gabriel to Totnes (and beyond) and offers glorious views, boating facilities as well as relaxing ferry rides between Dartmouth and Totnes. Dartmouth can also be reached via car ferry at Kingswear about 5 miles from the cottage and boasts excellent restaurants and markets. Torquay, Brixham and Paignton also offer many boat trips and nautical activities, great shopping and restaurants. The ancient historic town of Totnes offers 2 weekly markets, ferry boat and steam railway trips to Dartmouth, very interesting shops, riverside restaurants and tea rooms. Children are very well catered for throughout the whole area with Paignton Zoo, The South Devon Steam Railway, water parks, GoKarts and Krazy Golf, museums etc..
The National Trust's Greenway Gardens is near Galmpton by the river and Collaton Fishacre is very close by too. A small passenger ferry boat at Greenway will take you across the Dart over to Dittisham where you can enjoy a meal or a drink at the Ferry Boat Inn while the children practice their crabbing skills off the small pier. A large bell summons the ferry from the other side for the return journey! In August there are fantastic Regattas in Torquay and Dartmouth, with the Red Arrows flying centrestage.
The Blueflag awarded sandy beach at Broadsands is the nearest beach at just over a mile from the cottage as are coastal paths and cliff top walks, with magnificent panoramic seaviews to Elberry Cove and beyond as far as Brixham, which is approx. 3 miles.
There is a nearby fishing and a golf course at Churston and further afield at Dartmouth Country Club
For lucky dogs there are beaches nearby that allow dogs even during the high season at Goodrington Sands and Elberry Cove - see picture in photo gallery above.

Barnacle cottage is just what one would expect and hope for; a character cottage in every respect, plus all the trimmings which is an added bonus. It has a delightful ambience and is a truly rural idyll to come home to after a long day's sightseeing. One can walk to Greenway easily from the property and it is a beautiful walk. If one is feeling energetic, then walk to the local beach which again is a pleasant experience. When we arrived we were greeted with a Devon tea, such a nice touch after a long journey. The cottage was beautifully clean and so well equipped with every imaginable article one would ever want/need. The bathroom is upstairs which again, is an added bonus, considering the age of the property and the views from all windows are stunning. The people that own the cottage could not have been more helpful and friendly. We were welcome to share the beautiful grounds, but even had our private piece of garden, should we have wanted it. This holiday cottage is to be commended in every respect not just for the property itself, but for the area as well. There is a lovely local store, selling everything one could need, so no need for driving to the local supermarket. There is also a jolly good pub in the village and a bit further away, on the main road is a beautiful fish restaurant. If you are looking for a holiday cottage with charm in a peaceful and beautiful location, but not too 'cut off', then this cottage has it all. We will most certainly be going back. This is unusual as we usually find 'something' that we didn't like - not the case with Barnacle Cottage, cannot think of negatives. Well perhaps one - one week is not enough time.

If you're searching for a cosy, well-equipped and charming holiday rental on the English Riviera, look no further than Barnacle Cottage. We stayed here for a fortnight this June and had an absolutely wonderful time.
Not only does it look like everyone's idea of the picture-perfect, pink-washed, wisteria-covered Devon cottage, it's just so well-equipped with TWO SAT-TVs, WiFi internet access and every gadget or piece of kitchen equipment you could possibly need. Add to this 2 charming bedrooms with really comfy beds and the use of the lovely, large, sun-trap garden, what more could you ask?
Galmpton itself is a pretty village (do walk down to the quay) with excellent pub, well-stocked village store and even a common to walk the dog and is so near to Brixham and Torquay and yet away from all their noise and bustle.
Quite apart from being a great cottage for a family bucket-and-spade break, Barnacle is also excellently located as a touring base, with the Dart Estuary and Dartmouth on the doorstep and Totnes, Dartington, Dartmoor and Exeter all within easy reach. Agatha Christie's Greenway is just along the lane and half a dozen other National Trust places are nearby, including Art-Deco Coleton Fishacre and its glorious gardens.
The owner is so friendly and helpful - we were welcomed with a Devon Cream Tea in the garden on arrival - and Barnacle is also very dog-friendly. Your (well-behaved) pooch will be made most welcome but be aware that resident hounds Gip and Jenny expect their four-legged guests to be as nice as they are.
We'll certainly be back!
