The Limousin/Auvergne region

Please note that the Auvergne and the Limousin are in fact two entirely different Regions.

We live in the Haute Loire department of Southern Auvergne and are very happy to have found this beautiful peaceful region of France. There is so much to see and do in this area that is not possible to list everything. Whether you want peace and relaxation, visits to pretty villages, markets and châteaux, or to take part in many of the outdoor sports, walking, cycling, canoe/kayak, fishing, photography, painting, with its wide open spaces, river gorges, lakes, forests and mountains you will not be disappointed. There are walks down forest paths straight from the front door of the accommodation.

You can visit the Capital of the Auvergne with its volcanoes in the morning and then spend an afternoon in the splendid local spa. Take the tourist train down the river gorges, or canoe down the River Allier, go on forest walks straight from our front door, swim in the local lake and take a picnic lunch, forage for mushrooms and flowers in the forest and watch the birds of prey and red squirrels, or even a short walk with a donkey may be arranged.

Champagnac le Vieux is just 5 mins drive from us, or if you prefer you can take an enjoyable walk down the forest path (which will take about 35 mins). It has a boulangerie, local bar and swimming lake with beach. In the village itself there is also an old village church, still used today, built in 1509. Summer fetes and small local markets.

The market town of Brioude is just 20 mins drive from us, down a very quiet forest road with amazing scenery. at the heart of the town is La Basilique Saint Julien, which is the largest Romanesque Church in the Auvergne and dates from the 11th century. You will also find many small boutique shops, restaurants, tea room in the church square, art galleries and at least 3 museums.

Brioude has regular Saturday markets all year and also hosts summer fetes and brocantes.

From the 12th - 27th July 2013 it is the host town in the Haute Loire for the Art Festival d'Aquarelles. Art Festival.

The River Allier is also in Brioude, where you can swim, canoe or fish (in season).
