Enquire nowThe Limousin / Auvergne / Haute-Loire region
The Auvergne is the volcanic heart of France; a land of extinct volcanoes, mountains, forests, rivers and lakes. Many of the roads in the region cling to the sides of the precipitous gorges carved over millennia by the raging torrents below.
Hiking, canoeing, white-water rafting, fishing, mountain biking, horse riding, golf and skiing are all available in the area (and for the clinically insane, Bungee Jumping is also available!).
For those of a less energetic disposition, enjoy the breathtaking scenery; soak up the sun and swim at "Beach la Bageasse" swimming beach, or visit some of the other historic towns and villages in the vicinity, such as Le Puy-en-Velay, Langeac, Brioude and Saint Flour.
If painting and sketching this most beautiful part of the world is more your thing, we are happy to provide two easels for your use during your stay at Riverview.
The Seasons:
Spring: Warm and lush. With typical temperatures are between 15-25oC, the region takes on a vibrant feel as the forests break into life again.
Summer: Can be very warm; temperatures can easily reach 35oC in this area.
Autumn: The forest trees compete with one another in a festival of colours as the summer heat fades. Temperatures can reach up to 23oC at this time of year.
Winter: Snow! Temperatures drop to as low as minus 15oC. Bring snow-chains to access the minor roads (e.g. the one up to the house!)
Activities:
Hiking:- many local walks; details can be found in the guide-books we provide for our guests. Other guided walks are available from Walk Auvergne - see the link on the left.
Golf:- Three courses in the vicinity, as follows:
Puy-en-Velay golf course - 18 hole
La Plaine Lantriac golf course - 12 hole
Chambon-sur-Lignon golf course - 18 hole
Fishing:- Licences are available from the cafe in the village (on the church-side of the bridge); prices vary by season.
Carp (Lake) - Junction 18 of the A75
Carp (River) - Some very large carp have been caught in the Allier river itself.
Trout (River) - The Allier is famed for trout.
Salmon - PROHIBITED - The Allier was once famous for its huge salmon; sadly the river has been fished out. There is currently a programme to re-introduce the salmon to the Allier, hence the fishing ban to give the introductees the chance to establish themselves.
Canoeing/Rafting:- Several companies offer this activity. The most local is in the village.
Skiing:- There are three ski resorts within an hour of the house:
La Lioran
Besse Super Besse
Le Mont Dore
The Brioude / Lavoute-Chilhac area
Volcania - Clermont Ferrand 70km drive approx 1hr Great day out for the family

This is quiet, rural France. We stayed for a fortnight and had a very good time. The house is roomy and well equipped. There are two footpaths down to the village, but give yourself twenty minutes to... more |

This Gite has it all ! All the modern ammenities but also keeps so much character of the orginal house, lovely decor , large dinning / living room leading out onto a huge decking area to read , sunbathe or just take in the amazing views in a truly tranquil setting. When you wake up and open the shutters from your bedrooms the true beauty of France is laid out in front of you. It's location is set above the traditional French village of Lavoute-Chillac and i mean set above because you're litterally on top of the hill which overlooks the village and the whole valley. When you fancy a swim , or need to get some supplies from the village It's a 20 min windy road down , or 5 min steep descent via the footpath, the wife opted for the road ! In the Village you can sit in the Cafe and soak up the traditional French lifestyle , or swim ,sunbathe, fish , at the village beach which has sunbeds a lifeguard and safe area enclosed with buoys to swim, oh and volley ball court(all free !). The village has an epicerie , boulangerie , boucherie , and a couple of restaurants one which has an open area next to the village ,where boules is played in the evenings.Very entertaining, very good food and very reasonable prices. If you decided to explore or try one of the countless activities there were lots of leaflets in the Gite , or just ask in the village tourist office. The locals were all very hospitable and patient with our attempts to communicate in our very bad French. I must say our highlights were the day we spent as a family Kayaking down the river , it was so much fun. You take it at your own pace take a picnic stop at lovely inaccessable bays / beaches along the way and end up in the village ! All of us were novices but it didn't matter , safe and very enjoyable in the heat. I'm also a fisherman and took a rod , nothing complicated just a float and sweetcorn as bait , we all took turns , everyone caught , Chub , Goujoin (like roach) and my highlight was hooking a huge carp just under the bridge , only to loose it at the bank. Still it deserved it's freedom what a fight. Felt so depressed when we were leaving , can't wait to get back. |
