The Normandy / Eure region


Plenty to do and see:
Chateau d'Harcourt (4 miles) : Medieval castle and the oldest Arboretum in France in a wooded park of 100 hectares.
Le Bec Hellouin (4 miles) : Quaint Norman village with an 11th century Abbey where the monks make and sell pottery in their craft shop. Antique shops, an art gallery and a 30-mile paved footpath welcoming strollers and cyclists through forests and fields.
Bernay (10 miles) : Larger town with picturesque timbered buildings in the town centre, housing many small shops and terrace cafés. Visit the 11th century Notre Dame Abbey Church, the Musée des Beaux Arts (now an art gallery) and two other 14th century churches. There are two parks for children to play and an indoor and outdoor swimming pool.
Chateau de Champ de Bataille (15 miles) : 18th century castle + gardens with an 18-hole golf course.
Chateau de Beaumesnil (19 miles) : Another nearby castle set in a beautiful park. Often called The Norman Versailles.
Lisieux (24 miles) : 20th century Basilica built in memory of Saint Thérèse.
Cerza Wildlife Park (25 miles) : About 500 animals in natural surroundings set in 150 acres of woodland. Safari by miniature train. Great for a day out (picnic area + cafés, restaurants).
Rouen (30 miles) : Impressive architecture in the old town centre and a beautiful cathedral, museums and "Le Gros Horloge", steeped in the history of Joan of Arc.
Honfleur (35 miles) : A MUST ! An artist's paradise with its harbour and seafront restaurants and cafés. Often compared to Yorkshire's Whitby. Park with paddling pool and playground - great for young children.
Deauville + Trouville (40 miles) : Chic seaside resorts with long sandy beaches + casinos. Free seafront parking Mon-Fri from September-June.
Giverny (58 miles) : Claude Monet's house and gardens. A magnificent floral display in all seasons.
Festyland near Caen - Carpiquet (58 miles) : An adventure park for all ages.
Bayeux (77 miles) : Discover the history of Willam the Conqueror, view the famous tapestry, The Battle of Normandy Museum and the Cathedral.
Landing beaches (approx: 80 miles) : About a 90-minute drive. D-Day memorials - worth a day trip.
Versailles Palace (84 miles) : King Louis XVI's home + gardens. The "Hall of Mirrors" is a must.
Paris (88 miles) : Easily reached by train for a day-trip. EuroDisney (122 miles) about 2 hrs by car.
Le Mont Saint Michel (130 miles) : The "Wonder of the West" - Dominating the bay, the abbey boasts several marvels of medieval architecture.
The Brionne area
Brionne (Population 5000) : has a twice-weekly lively market (Sunday mornings + Thursday mornings, although Sundays are best). Here you can choose some fresh fish + seafood, local cheese and fruit and vegetables, or buy a chicken roasted on the spit with a French stick still warm from the oven. There's a leisure and sports area idyllically set by a lake where you can swim, fish, play tennis, crazy golf, hire peddle boats + canoes, fry your own food in the barbecue area or just relax under the trees. Several supermarkets, restaurannts, banks, chemists and terrace cafés. The local tourist office is open daily (even on Bank Holidays + Sundays) and offers free wifi access as well as brochures and maps of all the local places of interest.
Bernay (10 miles. Population 11,000) : Typical Norman architecture (see above). Market town (Saturday mornings) with many local products on offer, many made by small family businesses - Cheeses : Camembert, Pont L'Eveque, Livarot. Drinks : Cider, Calvados + Pommeau.
Tour de France - Famous cycle race: Stage 6 finishes in Lisieux ( 24 miles) on July 7th 2011.

Excellent accomodation clean modern and well presented. Made a great base for myself and my wife to tour normandy on our motorbike and even had a garage to keep it in.5 mins walk to brionne two supermarkets and a market twice a week plus a variety of other shops. |
