The Puglia/Molise region
Puglia is a region in southeastern Italy bordering the Adriatic Sea in the east, the Ionian Sea to the southeast, and the Strait of Òtranto and Gulf of Taranto in the south. It is bordered by the other Italian regions of Molise to the north, Campania to the west, and Basilicata to the southwest. It neighbors Greece and Albania, across the Ionian and Adriatic Seas, respectively.
Puglia enjoys a typically Mediterranean climate: mild in winter, dry & hot in summer.
After a three-hour flight from London, you’ll find yourself among the huge olive groves (Puglia produces almost half of all Italy’s olive oil) that cover low, fertile hills rolling down into the sparkling blue-green Adriatic Sea. On a clear day you can see across to Albania.
Wine lovers will enjoy tasting the local grapes - the region was once known as “the wine cellar of Europe”. Castel del Monte is produced in the north, and in the south, full-bodied reds such as Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera are popular. The local whites are lighter and include those from Locorotondo and Martina Franca.
The empty beaches provide serious chilling space with clear and warm water.
Puglian cuisine is a happy revelation: dig into the simply cooked fresh produce - including an abundance of seafood - and try the local pasta, orecchiette (which means little ears).

Brindisi / S. Vito Dei Normanni area
San Vito dei Normanni is a town of just over 20,000 inhabitants located in Puglia, the heel of Italy's boot, and is just 10 minutes away from the Adriatic Coast and its many beaches. The town is a perfect location to relax and experience real Italy, but is also in an ideal location should you wish to discover more of this beautiful region.
The centre of San Vito dei Normanni is around 3km from Villa Miranda. Aside from all the usual amenities expected of a town with 20,000 inhabitants, the area is also of historical importance.
In medieval times, San Vito dei Normanni housed a Slavonian colony from which it took its original name, San Vito degli Schiavoni (Slavonians). It was given its modern name only in 1863.
The well-preserved old town is quite clearly of medieval origin. Sections of its battlements survive to the present day and it contains a Castle (see left), constructed by Boemond of Hauteville in the XII century (of the original structure only a square tower remains) and rebuilt between the XV and XVI centuries.
Among the churches, one should single out the Parish Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria, which was built at the end of the XVI century to commemorate the victorious battle of Lepanto. In its interior one can find a beautiful silver portrait of San Vito.
The surrounding area is full of rock-churches and archaeological remains. Among the latter a visit is recommended to the so-called Paretone dei Greci (Wall of the Greeks), which lies about 3.5km towards Mesagne, near a farm close to a medieval hamlet known as Campi dei Longobardi (Fields of the Lombards). The Paretone dei Greci, or Limitone, is a megalithic wall of obscure origin which stretches for around 2km. It probably marked the limits of the territory of Byzantium in the area of Otranto.
The most noteworthy rock-chuch in the area of San Vito dei Normanni is that of San Biagio. Built on a rectanglar plan with three apses, it is full of exquisite, richly decorated frescoes.
San Vito dei Normanni is REAL Italy. You will enjoy a relaxing summer holiday whilst experiencing the tradition, culture and food that makes Italy what we know and love.
