The Puglia/Molise region
Pulgia is paradise location with plenty to see, do, taste, and enjoy. San Vito dei Normanni is a perfect position to please most travelers as it rests between the main Puglia attractions. Visitors can enjoy a day trip heading to the hills of Ostuni the 'White City', Alberobello the 'Trulli Capital' and/or continue on to the Basilicatà region to the pre-historic town of Matera where you can witness for yourselves the old cave dwellings across the large river ravine as well as explore ancient church and home dwellings carved out of the massive 'Rock-City'. Spend another day heading north, up the Adriatic Coast enjoying the intermittent sandy beaches, including 'Blu Flag' designated ones, as well as some of the most beautifully natural rock formations along the coast. Take a dip into the crystal clear waters at one of numerous public beach spots or luxuriate at one of the private beach spots under a rental umbrella on a comfy lounge chair. Head a bit futher up and see the historic 'Trulli' type homes on the beach front, dine at one of many excellent seaside restaurants or splurge and dine in a seaside cave. Enjoy a nice pre or post dinner walk along one of many city promenades or spend the day exploring beautiful churches, ancient ruins or any one of the historical city centers. Head a bit further north and take-in the salt lake zone of Gargano and Vieste. Spend another day heading west to the Ionian sea which is less than an hour away as Puglia is a pennisula between two seas, the Adriatic and Ionian. Enjoy expansive sandy beaches and maybe do a little wine tasting as you pass through Salento. Don't miss out on a trip down south to the 'heel of the boot' where the Adriatic meets the Ionian on the southern most point. Make sure you visit the most Eastern point of Otranto on your way. Enjoy fresh seafood, including rare sea urchins, either beach-side, hill-side or cliff-side. After visiting the lighthouse town of Santa Maria de Leuca, head up the Ionian coast to Gallipoli with its exquisite town center which boast some incredible architectural finds in its seaside location. So much to do, so many things to see and Villa Pilastra sits in the middle of it all!
San Vito dei Normanni hosts three open-air markets per week (Mon, Wed, Sat). Don't worry if you miss one of these, there is always a market to go to nearby, any day of the week except on most Sundays. There is an antique market held only a few kilometers from Villa Pilastra as you head into town. Ancient, old and new Italian items can be found for very reasonable prices and it's a very social event with most of the town folks participating. There are also numerous patron saint festivals held throughout Puglia in various cities year round as well as 'sagra' food and wine festivals which celebrate local wares, foods, wines and typically have cultural events mixed in. Dance to the traditional folk music, watch the 'Taranta' fever dancers or sing along to one of the very talented 'cover' groups which mimic some of the best rock & pop music groups ranging from 60s to the 90s. Enjoy near-nightly live bands playing at one of the dozen+ bars in the town center or within walking distance of Villa Pilastra. You won't have to worry about parking or drinking as the street-lighted walk is enjoyable and off the main highways. There are also bikes available upon request and San Vito has plenty of bike parking and several designated trails for longer distance rides through the olive groves. You can visit old farms 'masserias' along the way and try their homemade cheeses, salumeria meats, olive oil products and even wine. Time's a wasting...get here before all the treasures are uncovered!
