The Puglia/Molise region
The region is renowned for its ancient olive groves and vineyards with a climate encouraging an abundance of fresh produce which can be purchased at the daily local markets.
For sun worshippers there are beaches to suit all tastes ranging from long sandy and unspoilt stretches, beaches set in coastal resorts or secluded rocky coves.
Alberobello known as the Capital of the Trulli is very unusual with lots of buildings known as trullo. The trullo is a fascinating architectural feature of this area of Puglia, a building with conical roof made without mortar. Alberobello has special status internationally - designated a UNESCO world heritage site - because its collection of some 1,500 trulli in an urban environment is unique. Some of the trulli are now used for stores, restaurants, and lodging, but many are still inhabited by locals, who are very friendly to visitors. Alberobello is a tourist attraction, but it is not overrun, especially away from the main tourist honey pot, and most visitors are Italian. Areas to visit, include the two trulli zones, the Basilica, Trullo Sovrano, the trullo church of St Antony and the trulli museum.
The caves at Castellano: Near Fasano, have magnificent underground caverns.
Cripta di San Biagio 15 mins away from Villa Poggio (and signposted) is one of the most important 'Rock Churches' in the region. Inside this cave church, you will find 12th Century paintings, and exquisite, richly decorated frescos.
The Brindisi / San Vito dei Normanni area
San Vito dei Normanni is 1km from Villa Poggio. Aside from all the usual amenities expected of a town with 20,000 inhabitants, the area is also of historical importance. Ostuni (known locally as ‘The White City’ so named for its white walls and its typically white-painted architecture) is approx 20 minute drive. Lecce ‘The Florence of South’ so called because of the quantity of important baroque monuments found there, is approx 40 minute drive.
San Vito has two Squares (piazza) with many cafes, bars/icecream parlours. Or visit the sidestreets where you will come across typical trattorias and restaurants where you can relax and enjoy a traditional meal or sit and have a drink or an icecream whilst mixing with the friendly puglinese.
Nearby the protected coast and the nature reserve of Torre Guaceto is comprised of and encloses a precious stretch of an uncontaminated and charming coast where time seems to have stopped. The park extends itself at approximately 1000 hectares of land and 2000 hectares of sea that makes up an overall stretch of coast of approx 7km. The tall sand dunes which peak on the sea are studded in the summer season with lillies and are overcome by century-old junipers.
Fasano Zoo Safari and Fun Park offers a brilliant day out for all the family as does Aquafollies Water Park in Lido Silvana on the Ionian Coast..
There is a public tennis court within walking distance of the villa approx 500m for those who have plenty of energy.
For cycling enthusiasts Villa Poggio offers 4 adult mountain bikes should you wish to explore the surrounding countryside which is very flat with many attractive country lanes.
An information pack is available with the villa covering local amenities and places of interest.

2 weeks in Italy in september; lovely hosts, beautful villa and a fantastic location. The region of puglia is stunning, unspoilt and loaded with great places to visit and some beautiful scenery and beaches. Even though it was coming to the end of the holiday season there was still plenty to do and lots of welcoming locals at great restaurants. Towns like lecce, ostuni, gallipoli and otranto were great for day trips and dinners whilst smaller seaside places such as santa sabini and pantanagianni provided great safe beaches and lovely food. We were travelling with our 11 month old and the welcome we received everywhere was great, high chairs a plenty and lots of pasta dishes for him to tuck into. Last but not least there was the villa itself and the two owners, steve and ange; the villa was spacious with plenty of room for the family and well set-up with everything you'd need inclusive a very safe enclosed patio for the boy to crawl around in. The pool was huge, spotless and very welcoming, nicely nestled between fruit trees. Steve and ange live on-site and were wonderful hosts, always on hand to offer recommendations and help whilst also leaving you with your own space, although great company for a chat and glass of the local wine. Daisy, billy and charlie, the dogs, are very friendly and daisy in particular seems to have a knack of charming every guest that sets foot in villa poggio. All in all a great holiday, one of the best!! |

From the warmest of welcomes to the sad farewell, we had a wonderful week in the sun. It's the first time we've rented a Villa with a pool and not planned anything. Our usual family holidays are two weeks or more and involve lots of days out, activity and travel between accommodation. This time - due to work commitments - we only had one week away so looked for relaxation, sunshine, food, drink and culture. We got it all and came away tanned and refreshed. The Villa is spotless. It has everything you need - and more - and a huge pool. It's minutes away from great beaches and dozens of days out and cultural attractions. We loved eating outside and reading by the swimming pool. Angela and Steve are perfect hosts - always on hand but never in the way. We're already planning a return visit. |

Villa Poggio was everything we hoped for and more. It is away from the hustle and bustle yet conveniently located for the local town and surrounding coasts and the many places of interest. The villa is spacious, comfortable and well equipped. The veranda that is shaded in the late morning is a lovely place to sit and dine. The swimming pool is large, clean and well landscaped for privacy. Angela and Steve the owners are very welcoming, friendly and helpful. We will most definitely be going back 10 out of 10!
