The Puglia/Molise region

Puglia could almost be described as the area that time has passed by. Hundreds of miles of open countryside filled with Olive groves and just about every other fruit tree bulging with fresh fruit and every acre of ground full of fresh produce.
From small hamlets, to small villages, to small towns, to larger towns and cities, each unique with its own personal history and traditions, each claiming to supply the freshest and most mouth watering food imaginable, when in fact they are all supplying local delicacies unique to that particular village or town.
The sea coast with plenty of bays and beaches attracts everyone to the water which is warm, crystal clear and unspoilt, drive to find a spot you like, park up, grab your cool box and beach 'toys' then walk through the nearest dune or track and wow the Adriatic Sea - beautiful.
With so many historic, picturesque or just quaint places to see within easy reach of your holiday home it would be difficult to say which you 'MUST' see.
The Brindisi / San Vito dei Normanni area
Many day trips are possible :
Alberobello, Cisternino, Locorotondo : The trulli-area, see the wonderful 'trulli scrumptious houses' find out their history?
Fasano, Matera (to see how people lived and still live in caves cut into the hillside, Ostuni (fantastic when its lit up a night) Mesagne, Lecce, (at the end of the 'Appian' way and known as the Venice of the south) all depict southern italy and its people who are lovely.
Our town San Vito De Normanni :It is said that our own Saint Vito defeated the Normans and sent them packing. Brinidisi the bigger sister is full of shops and amenities and its great port with its direct ferry crossing to Greece, is steeped in history and in ancient times is where every Army crossed to battle in the Crusades.
You could even take the 4 hour drive, stay overnight and visit Pompeii the buried and ruined Roman City located near Naples.
Puglia, is steeped in a veritable kaleidoscope of history and traditions. Over hundreds of years it has been invaded many times and each time a little culture and tradition has been left behind, which in turn has created such a diverse and beautiful legacy for us all to enjoy today.

| Nearest Travel Links | |
| Airport: | Brindisi: 20 km |
| Railway: | San Vito Dei Normanni: 8 km |
| Ferry: | Brindisi: 20 km |
Getting to Puglia can be very straight forward, just jump on a direct 'RYANAIR' fllght from Stanstead to 'Brindisi' or from (June 2012) a direct 'EASYJET' direct flight from Gatwick to 'Bari' and in just over two hours you'll land in a warm and sunny Puglia.
There are alternatives. from London Heathrow with 'ALITALIA' via Rome or Milan and then down to Brindisi, you could even arrange to have a stopover in Rome and do a bit of extra sightseeing before coming down to us.
OR. If you live in the west country in the UK you could try 'EASY JET' from Bristol to Rome or Naples, hire a car at the airport and take a leisurely 3 or 5 hour drive down along the beautiful coast road motorway. OR.
Bristol to Naples via 'THOMPSON AIR' on a Friday only (can be very, very cheap) and then drive down which takes only about three and a half hours, failing any of the above a bit of internet research will no doubt bring up a few other alternatives.
Car hire is quite reasonable and most of the major well known companies are represented at both Brindisi and Bari airports. Try carrentals.co.uk a car hire comparison website - very good.
You will need a car for this holiday in order to take advantage of the miles of empty roads, taking you through some of Italy's most beautiful scenery, hamlets, villages, towns and cities and of course driving down to the beach with all that gear for the kids.

What a wonderful place I was unsure before going as never had been to the area before and was worried as the last time I went abroad and rented a villa it was not like the pictures advertised, but I needn't have worried Serena was just stunning I can honestly say the pictures don't do it full justice. It has every thing you could need and more and I spent many a day relaxing by the pool in the beautiful surroundings lost in my book while the kids played in the pool and many an evening enjoying eating outside taking in the beauty of it all. The local area is lovely and so are the people, the whole experience was second to none I will sure be booking to go again next year if not before if I get the chance !!! |
