The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente region
The Charente is said to boast the second sunniest climate in France, the Charente offers you all the makings of a perfect holiday. With its rolling countryside, Romanesque architecture and numerous châteaux, you'll be spoilt for choice on how to spend your holiday. The area has many lakes and rivers. wonderful walkways and riverside locations, making it ideal for walking, picnicing or fishing. With such a diverse mix of woodland, rivers and hundreds of lakes, its little wonder the area is teaming with wild life and bird life with regular sightings of, Merlin Hoopoes Honey buzzard Heron Woodpecker Owls Pied flycatcher Treecreeper To name just a few.
Approx 25 km you can drive to the grand cosmopolitan city of Limoges, famous for its porcelain and lace, its has much to offer, combining old and new, it has fantastic shops, a 10 screen cinema, an aquarium, a fun park, fantastic restaurants and beautiful architecture.
Further afield there's the Futuroscope Theme Park at Poitiers and the city of Angouleme which boasts a new modern shopping mall.
Or maybe you could take a leisurely drive in the countryside, taking in ancient monuments and countless vineyards along the way.
Brigueuil area
The villa is located on the outskirts of the ancient fortified village of Brigueuil which dates back to the 10th century. The fortification remains today and within the walls you will find fine examples of medieval architecture. There is an opportunity to visit the underground caves as tours are frequent during summer months.
Just a short walk of 500m from the villa you will find the village centre which comprises of all amenities including small food shop, bread shop, pharmacy, butcher shop, restaurant, bar/cafe, post office, hairdresser, library, garage.
Just on the outskirts there is a 25 acre fishing lake with huge carp. There is an equestrian centre with horse riding and stables.
All within easy reach you will find ancient market towns such as Saint Junien, set on the river Vienne, also boasting an 18 hole golf course with top class restaurant. There is two sets of golf clubs available on request.
Confolens, also set on the Vienne, is around 15 km. Every August it hosts an international music and dance festival which lasts for a whole week, fantastic, a must to visit..
Nearby you can visit the village of the martyrs, Oradour/sur/Glane. It has been rebuilt with a museum, artefacts, memories and exhibitions, attracting thousands of visitors every year.
About 7 km's away at Etagnac, you will find a huge swimming lake with a small beach (lifeguards in summer).Also picnic tables and a small cafe.
