HISTORIC BRIGHTON
History forms a richly textured backdrop to modern day Brighton living. Walking around, four hundred years of history and style unfold before you. The Royal Pavilion is the magnificent palace created by King George IV. From the Indian Moghul-style domes of the exterior to the sumptuous Chinese interior, the Pavilion is an eclectic mix of styles that has to be seen to be believed.

The Regency period is evident in the seafront squares of Brunswick and Kemp Town and a visit to the Regency Townhouse brings it all alive. Also, visit Preston Manor, forever preserved as home to the Edwardian gentry.

The 17th century Lanes mark the site of the original fishing town. The narrow thoroughfares and 'twittens' that characterise the area were built to the original medieval town plan. Explore Brighton’s origins at the Fishing Museum housed in original fisherman’s arches on the seafront.

Victorian England is still alive in Hove’s wide avenues and seafront lawns. Stroll out to sea on the Victorian Brighton Pier or instead take a ride on the Volks – England’s oldest electric railway.

Discover more about Brighton's history on a guided walk of the city. Themes include 'The Legends of the Lanes', 'Lives of the Rich & Famous' and 'Spooky Brighton'.

Join a back stage tour of the city’s historic and prestigious Theatre Royal and learn about ghostly happenings, underground streams, famous visitors and royal connections.

PARKS & GARDENS
Famous for its bustling seaside location, Brighton is also blessed with an abundance of green open spaces – perfect to relax in if you are a battle-weary shopper or worn-out reveller.

The regal blooms and cultivated lawns of the Royal Pavilion, recently restored to their original regency splendour, is an oasis of stately calm in the hub of the city. Venture out from the city centre in any direction and you will have a wealth of parks, greens and gardens to choose from. City parks to the north, east and west include Preston Park, a major events space, St Ann’s Well Gardens with its wooded parkland and Queens Park complete with a Victorian Clock Tower and large duck pond.

ARTS & CULTURE
Brighton is home to artists, designers, writers, pop stars, actors and creative people of all kinds. Perhaps that’s why the arts are so much part of everyday life here. Just walking round you will see art and sculpture on the street and beachfront, and there are galleries and studios showing up-and-coming work by local talent.

Come in May and you will catch the annual Brighton Festival, which takes over the city as the biggest arts fiesta in England. For three weeks, thousands of people come to see hundreds of events from contemporary dance and lunchtime recitals to street theatre performances and artists’ open houses. Throughout the year there are festivals of jazz, dance and animated theatre, heritage weekends, plays, live music, opera, fringe theatre, cinema, comedy and cabaret.

Brighton and Hove / Kemptown area

A sparkling mix of sea and city, Brighton is perfect for a break at any time of year.

There’s elegant Regency architecture, museums and galleries, great shopping, stylish cafés, bars and restaurants, glittering night-life, arts and theatre – and all the fun of the seaside, in just under an hour from central London.

1. Take a guided tour of the extraordinary and extravagant Royal Pavilion.

2. Ride from Brighton Pier to Brighton Marina on Volks Railway.

3. Browse for unique souvenirs around Artists Quarters at the Beachfront.

4. Find some vegetarian shoes in the bohemian North Laine.

5. Tuck into traditional fish ‘n’ chips and champagne on Brighton Pier.
