The South East England region

Sussex offers both beautiful coastline and rambling countryside, as well as big city excitement. Brighton is often referred to as London-by-the-Sea, but if that's not quite good enough London itself is only an hour away by train. Brighton town is sandwiched between its vibrant beachfront culture and the beautiful rolling South Downs National Park, which is a haven for walkers and horseriders. Further east along the A27 is the ancient town of Lewes, with its flea markets and antique shops. A little further east in the countryside is Charleston House, the retreat of the Bloomsbury Group, which included the author Virginia Woolf and the artist Duncan Grant. The house has been preserved as the artists lived in it and is a fascinating insight into their lives and times. A little further inland in the village of Rodmell is Virginia and Leonard Woolf's other country retreat, Monk's House, which has also been preserved as they lived in it by the National Trust. For the children, there's a wealth of farm parks, including Middle Farm and Spring Barn Park, which both have great cafes and farm shops. If you enjoy a spot of boating, The Anchor at Barcombe Mills hires out rowing boats for you to find some peace and tranquility on the River Ouse. For wine buffs, there's a number of vineyards in the surrounding countryside open to the public for tastings, some of which produce award-winning sparkling wines.

Brighton and Hove

Brighton truly has something for everyone - a vibrant beachfront with traditional pier, art galleries, theatres, live music, shops both mainstream and independent in the famous Laines, funfairs, amusement arcades, restaurants, pubs and clubs. The Hanbury Ballroom, just a 5-10 minute walk from the apartment, is a supper club and cabaret venue, which has burlesque shows at the weekends. Kemp Town village is a 5 minute walk towards the sea, with its cafes, bars and restaurants and lovely little independent shops, including a fabulous flea market. The town's marina, which is another 5 minutes walk east, has a bowling alley, cinema, casino, supermarket, power boat rides, fishing trips and a number of good waterfront restaurants, as well as free parking. Just inland from the marina is a pitch and putt golf course with a lovely traditional English cafe. From Easter until October half-term, the Volks electric railway runs between the Palace Pier and the Marina, with a stop in Kemp Town - a 5-minute walk from the apartment. On Kemp Town beach, there's the Barefoot Beach Cafe which has volleyball courts with imported sand and great cafe. In May every year, the town hosts an arts festival which is the second largest in Europe after Edinburgh. Then there's the beautiful Brighton Pavilion with its majestic onion domes and eclectic interior, including the plush music room. During December and January the Pavilion Gardens hosts an ice rink and a pop-up restaurant. In short, Brighton is a seaside town for people who are willing to forego a sandy beach for great food and wine, arts and music and lots of sea air!
