The South East England / Sussex region

Brighton sits neatly between the sea and the South Downs National Park. If you want to flee the hustle and bustle of the city, it's an easy open top bus ride out to Devil's Dyke and Ditchling Beacon, not to mention the stunning cliffs of the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head, all of which are accessed by public transport or a good days ramble! The Sussex countryside north of the Downs is truly gorgeous and you'll find a million and one public footpaths and public houses!
The Brighton and Hove / Brighton Seafront area
Brighton itself has a lot to offer. The biggest event in the town's calendar is the Brighton Festival, now in its 42nd year. The festival welcomes what some people describe as "an orgy of culture" to the city and lasts for three weeks in May. Hosting events ranging from street carnivals and pyrotechnic displays to open artists houses and talks by novelists, politicians and comedians alike - not to mention a plethora a live stage performances.
In October Brighton plays host to the Paramount Comedy festival which attracts artists from all corners of the globe.
Throughout the summer the city is visited by a wide range of people, here for sun and beach or for short city breaks.

6 of us rented this place out as a crash pad for a 3 day trip to Brighton. It's in a great location being a couple of minutes walk from the seafront and shops meaning it was ideal for us. We... more |

Couldn't believe it when we arrived. The flat was on a par with student accommodation. Had it not been that we were only there for two days and had already paid for the apartment we would have gone straight to a hotel. Bathroom and kitchen were disgusting. Bathroom had not been clean and still had someone else's belongings in. Kitchen was so filthy we couldn't bring ourselves to use it. Bedrooms - beds had been stripped when we arrived but had not been remade - we were told that laundry would arrive later. Based on the state of the rest of the apartment we went to Asda and bought cheap pillows, sheets etc as this was the only way we could have stayed here. We thought someone was probably living there and that they moved out for the duration when the place was rented. it was still full of their stuff. At one point we had to move the sofa (so that we could see the tv). We very swiftly moved it back - I cannot imagine the last time anyone had cleaned under it. Disgusting. Do not stay here. |

I'l start with the positives: brilliant position near the seafront and town. The apartment was in poor condition and dirty - the place needed a real good spring clean, clearly hadnt been done in a while. The toilet brush should come with a severe health warning, as should the oven. The attraction of renting an apartment over staying in a hotel were diminished. Cooking would have proved impossible - do you really want to clean every single utensil before you can use it? We used our own plastic wine glasses throughout our stay. Damp in the bedrooms. MAJOR PROBLEM: it is advertised that the flat sleeps up to six people - this is false. I have no problem with the apartment being small (which it is) but I want it to be able to sleep comforatably all of the people that have paid to stay there. The sofa bed is broken, and according to the guest book has been for a very long time - three years. Clearly this feedback has never been read by the owner, who upon recieving a phone call highlighting the problem informed us that we would 'have to sleep on the floor'. Thanks Alex - thats really what we paid £80 for. |
