The South East England / Sussex region

Clayton is situated just below The South Downs and The South Downs Way, a footpath that runs for 100 miles from Eastbourne to Winchester. It is ideal for walking, cycling or horse riding. There are many golf courses, riding stables and famous National Trust gardens nearby.

Brighton and Hove / Hassocks area

Clayton is famous for it's twin windmills The Jack and Jill Windmills, one of which grinds corn on every Sunday throughout the summer months. Every November the London to Brighton vintage car rally goes past the end of our lane and this is one of the best vantage points of the whole race, as Clayton Hill is one of the longest hills of the race and it is often the one where these vintage cars have lots of trouble!! Clayton Flower Festival is every June and the decorating of the church is breathtaking.

How to get there

AboutMyPlace

View Interactive Map

Fly to Gatwick Airport. Take the A23 to Brighton. Turn off the A23 at Pyecombe (the turnoff just before Brighton) onto the A273 to Hassocks. Follow the Hassocks signs until you go over Clayton Hill. At the bottom of Clayton Hill go very slowly and take the first right hand turn at the bottom of the hill into Underhill Lane, following the Clayton sign. If you miss this turning you will either take the next immediate right hand turn that goes to Ditchling or else you will pass The Jack and Jill pub, either way you have gone too far. When you turn into Underhill Lane go very slowly as it is quite narrow, go past the church, past all the houses and just keep going, we are about one mile from the junction. Don't turn back, we are there but we are about half a mile from the village and there is a bed and breakfast sign outside the property.
