The Bern/Obwalden region

Brienz is a charming village in the Bernese Oberland in the heart of Switzerland, 17 km east of the town of Interlaken (25 minutes by car, good and frequent rail link). The town is located about 560 m. above sea level and has approximately 3,000 inhabitants.

Brienz combines the advantages of the mountain and the lake ; it is a well-known resort for winter and summer holidays. It does not have tall buildings ; it is a village of chalets and flowers carefully kept with the air of yesteryear, and it is good to walk in its streets. A number of these chalets date back to the 18th century, including those of "Brunngasse" ornated with woodcarvings. However, there is also the main street, with all amenities shops ; there are several restaurants serving local specialties (eg "Älplermagronen" ) upon the lake, with a terrace, with a beautiful and peaceful view.

Brienz is famous even beyond the borders of Switzerland as the village of woodcarvers. You can buy many wooden objects as souvenirs. There are quite a lot of cultural activities in the region, like the open-air museum of Ballenberg, with hundreds of old houses from the Swiss rural habitat of 16th to 19th centuries. Many activities of traditional crafts are made on site for the visitors.

The mountainous environment allows hiking and climbing, but also paragliding. The steam cog railway (the only still on in Switzerland, from 1892), which departure station is in the village of Brienz, takes its passengers within an hour in an impressive mountain scenery, up to the top of the Brienzer Rothorn (2350 m. of altitude). There are also many walking paths and hiking trails. Walking from the village of Brienz sometimes offers the opportunity for unexpected encounters like ibexes.

The village area is not steep-sided: the lake of Brienz gives an extensive overview and a sense of freedom. This lake offers many activities in Brienz or in Interlaken like steamer rides, sailing, pedal boating, swimming, fishing and diving. But fans can also find many other activities, from Brienz to Interlaken (within 20 km) : tennis (in Brienz), golfing, squash, riding school, mountain bike, carriage rides, walks with llamas (in Brienz), mini golf, skateboard ramp or bowling.

The military airbase of Meiringen is in the vicinity of Brienz (4 km away). While there are no jet flights during summer, the rest of the year looks like an airshow a couple of minutes a day, with Swiss fighter jets taking off and landing.

Brienz

The chalet "L'Etoile des Prés" (Star of the Fields) was built in 1934 and is in a very calm area. There is a sports fields on the other side of the street, so there is no building opposite and will never be one, since the sports fields belongs to the village school nearby. There is almost no traffic in this residential area. A herd of sheeps is grazing around the chalet during spring and autumn. This allows exceptionnally relaxing holidays.
