The Rhineland / Rhine Valley / Rhineland Palatinate region

The largest wine producing area in Germany, and has 6 of the 9 wine-producing districts in Germany and is full of museums, exhibitions and castles.
Rhineland-Palatinate is proud of its rich historical heritage. There are over 1,500 castles, castle ruins and palaces across the state, making tours of discovery especially exciting. There are also many fascinating historical towns and cities, some with a history going back more than 2,000 years. To mention just a few, these include Mainz, the state capital, Trier, with its formidable Roman ruins, Worms, a town with a splendid Romanesque cathedral, Koblenz, at the confluence of the Rhine and the Moselle, and the cathedral city of Speyer. There are high-class exhibitions on offer all year round at Rhineland-Palatinate's highly regarded museums.
Rhineland-Palatinate offers spectacular scenery with romantic river valleys, crystal-clear lakes, endless forests, and famous wine-growing areas as well as numerous historical towns and villages. All this makes the state a prime vacation destination. The Unesco declared the region 2002 a World Heritage Site.
For wine lovers all over the world the Moselle region is a true treasure. Only a few areas produce so many different wines whose flavours reflect the splendour of the region. The Moselle Valley offers wonderful countryside and charming villages with famous names such as Cochem, Traben-Trarbach or Bernkaste-Kues.

The Briedel area
In the heart of the Mosel Valley, with vineyards clinging to steep stony hillsides and surrounded
by breathtaking scenery, the picturesque working wine village of Briedel nestles on the banks of the river. Steeped in history and with many beautiful listed timber-framed houses, a Baroque church with a Stumm organ and ceiling paintings, a fountain in the village centre and the nearby wooded area of Briedeler Schweiz (“Briedel Switzerland) there is much to see
From Briedel, one can walk along the river front to the neighbouring villages, cycle for hours on the well kept cycle paths stopping at villages along the way, enjoy a boat cruise, take the small ferry to the opposite side of the river to walk amongst the vineyards on the many walking trails, swim, canoe, visit historical buildings, sample the local famous village wines, or enjoy the atmosphere and German specialties at the restaurants and bars.
A short distance from Briedel are many picturesque villages and towns each with their own historical sites, local wines, bars, cafes and tourist attractions. A swimming pool (with slides), Hospital (complete with helicopter rescue), shopping complex ( Globus, Lidel, Aldi, Pharmacy etc) are all nearby and the village of Bullay has an excellent train service to cities such as Koblenz and the Roman city of Trier which are ideal for a day out. Family/group tickets for train travel are very reasonably priced.
A little further afield but within an hour’s drive are places such as Cochem, Bernkastle, Bad Betrich thermal springs, The Treetops Forest, Golf and so much more - whether it is culture, adventure or relaxation you seek, the Mosel region has something to offer everyone……simply experience and enjoy!.

An ideal base to discover the mossel valley close to Traben Trabeck, Zell and Punderich. Briedel is a quiet town which feels traditional and homely. A half hour walk into Zell and you arrive in a more touristy area with shops and countless cafe's and wine shops. There are walks above the town which are well sign posted and allow you to wander across wooded areas and discover old roman ruins. I would also recommend a drive to Luxemburg which is around 1 hour 15 minutes away. There are ample sites to see and plenty of shops to visit as well as cheap fuel (diesel 1 euro 17 at time of visit). |
