The West Country / Dorset region
The magnificent Dorset coastline, together with the outstanding natural beauty of the unspoilt countryside, makes this county a very special place to come and explore.
Discover the breathtaking Jurassic Coast, England's first natural World Heritage Site, stretching for 95 miles from neighbouring East Devon to Studland Bay in Dorset. There is so much to do along this stunning coastline, which is world famous for fossil hunting. There are wonderful views for walkers on the South West Coast Path National Trail, or you can simply enjoy the spectacular scenery on a gentle coastal cruise.
Away from the coast you will find miles and miles of rolling countryside sprinkled with charming villages and fascinating market towns. Almost all of Dorset's countryside is protected and is home to a huge diversity of wildlife in downlands, tranquil river valleys, water meadows, woodlands and colourful heathlands.
This is also Thomas Hardy country - ancient Wessex, home of the Mayor of Casterbridge, Tess of the D'urbervilles and Jude the Obscure. You will find many other famous literary associations across the area including Jane Austen, John Fowles, TE Lawrence and Enid Blyton.
