The West Country region
This is a breathtaking coastline, most of which comprises the Jurassic Coast, and some of the country's finest rural countryside, a large part of which is officially designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
If you are feeling active, ramble along miles of footpaths, or make the most of the area's outstanding watersports facilities which the 2012 Olympic sailing athletes will use. If your interest is in heritage, the area offers numerous historic houses, gardens, castles and forts. Enjoy the lively seaside resorts and busy maritime harbours. Or, simply recharge your batteries and be inspired by an area of stunning countryside views, idyllic villages and market towns.
Chideock is only a stone's throw from Bridport (and West Bay) to the east and Charmouth to the west, both of which are outstanding holiday destinations in their own right. Chideock has it's own holiday access to the Jurassic Coast via Seatown. This is the favoured parking place for holiday makers who wish to climb the famous Golden Cap, which is only 2 miles away. Seatown beach is also wll known for fossilling. The seating area outside the Anchor Inn at Seatown is a magical spot to watch the sunsets - on the beach (see phot gallery). Also famed for Thomas Hardy walking to the pub for a well earned pint.
Situated in one of the most picturesque valleys in this part of the county, and spelled as Chideock in the Doomsday Book, this peaceful view of the village street lined with well-built cob and sandstone cottages precedes the arrival of the motor vehicle, and the transformation of this thoroughfare into the busy A35.
There is plenty to do for everyone: golfing, walking, fishing, eating (celebrity chefs such as Mark Hix, Hugh Fearnley Whittinstall, and Matt Follas are all local). Bridport Leisure Centre is a 5 minute drive away as is the art and craft market town of Bridport (market days are Wednesdays and Saturdays). The Electric Palace (picture house and music venue) has recently re-opened and Bridport Arts Centre offers something for all tastes.
