The Heart of England/Peak District

A E Houseman once wrote that Shropshire was "the quietest place under the sun" and today the county remains something of a rural idyll, recognised as one of the least crowded and most peaceful regions in England.

Bridgnorth

The town of Bridgnorth is split into two very distinct halves - The High Town and Low Town - divided by the red sandstone ridge on which it is built. Connected by winding streets and stairs as well as the steep funicular railway, visitors can see what Charles I called 'the finest view in all the kingdom'. With a bustling Saturday market providing a colourful backdrop against which to explore the town and castle ruins, Bridgnorth is also close to the River Severn, offering many picturesque riverside walks. The Severn Valley Railway also runs nearby - between Bridgnorth and Kidderminster - using a variety of steam and diesel engines. Surrounding Bridgnorth is a wealth of country parks, great houses, museums and Shropshire villages, as well as easy access to the Royal Air Force Museum at Cosford, Ironbridge Gorge, Shrewsbury, Ludlow and Church Stretton.
