The North West Italy / Aosta Valley region
The Valle d'Aosta is surrounded bu the highest mountains in Europe: such as theh Mont Blanc, the Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn, it is also the smallest region in Italy with only 120,000 inhabitants. The Aosta Valley is well-known for its famous skiresorts, such as Breuil-Cervinia, La Thuile and Courmayeur. The capital, Aosta 580m a.s.l. , origanally was called Augusta Pretoria and was founded by the Romans in 25 B.C.
In this intersting city, wherever you go you are reminded of the ancient Roman town, from the Arch of August to the Theatre. Every village has its churches and houses built in the typical rural architectural style, some are now museums where you can discover the habits and customs of Aosta Valley. But let's not forget the numerous castles: Fenis, Issogne, St Pierre, Aymavilles, Verres,...and the Bard Fortress, which has just be renovated and now hosts the Museum of the Alps Among Aosta Valley's infinity of natural riches are some trekking routes of exceptional beuaty, where it is possible to explore mountain traditions, taste typical local produce and admire the extraordanary architecture of small mountain villages - all this walking along ancient footpaths, with a rucksack on your back, in the silence of the great mountains, among wild animals and carpet of flowers. If you like something more moundain what about an evening in the "Casino of St-Vincent"? Aosta Valley means also good cooking.
Among the most characteristic ingredients of Valdostan cooking is Fontina Dop, a tasty cheese made of cow's milk, still produced according to an artisanal procedure. Specialities not to be missed are the "Zuppa alla Valpellinenze" or an excellen rustic "Polenta". A typical main course is "Carbonada". Also worth trying is the local game, such as chamois or roebuck, cooked with red wine and spices and served with "Polenta". Excellent cured meat such as Bosses ham, ArnadLard and famous "Mocetta"(smoked chamois pickled with seasoning and herbs sand then dried). It is a local custom to end you r meal with the traditional Valdostan Coffee. This is a boiling cocktail of coffee, grappa, cognac lemon and orange peel, sugar and spices. Everyone drinks from the same wooden container featuring drinking spouts and kwonn as "Coppa dell'Amicizia". The Aosta Valley can also be proud of a large list of excellent red and white wines. The Aosta Valley is worth to be discovered as well in the winter as in the summer.
