Our first trip abroad for 7 years or so with our 3 children, 12 and 11 year old girls and 9 year old boy. We wanted a bit of what we consider luxury, so it was a stop over in a hotel before getting a cabin on the night ferry to St Malo, arriving on a Saturday. The owner Paula had provided us with excellent directions, however I was relying on the TomTom in the main. Arriving at the house we were surprised at exactly how quiet and peaceful a location it was, it was about 100 yards from the quiet road, overlooked by a barn undergoing conversion (clearly by a couple who turned up presumably when time allowed and were never noisy) and one other house about 70 yards away behind some poplars and barely visible really. The house looked very pleasant on the approach, and is over two floor set in to a banking. When we got in there was a bottle of wine and a baguette with a welcome note on the work surface of the well appointed kitchen, with butter and milk in the fridge, which was thoughtful, although Paula, the owner, had contacted us beforehand and advised us to be aware that shops would be closed on the Sunday as normal, but also on the Monday due to a French holiday, so we had already got a few bits just to cover us. All bedrooms were of a good size and nice and clean with a pleasant outlook for each. It was also handy that the owners appear to have a son and daughter of possibly a similar age, as the rooms were decorated very much to our kids liking, including books and some toys. There was a nice large dining room with good sized table and chairs for up to 10. On this floor was a nice bathroom. Downstairs to a utility room with a second food preparation area, freezer, beer cooler, crockery, cutlery, washing machine and tumble dryer. There was another bathroom with a shower. A fifth bedroom was also down there as was the lovely, large and what turned out to be, due to being set into the banking, and thankfully in the hot weather, a haven of cool, living room, with ample seating. There was a large TV with DVD player, freeview SKY, and surround sound. There was a good selection of books to read and some games. Then it was out to the huge covered patio area with huge table and again plenty of seats, a large gas BBQ and 4 sunbeds. The pool was lovely and a bit bigger than we had anticipated and really enjoyed messing about in it for hours on end, it was great. Across from this was the very charming Lake. It appeared to our untrained eyes to have loads of fish swimming around it. There was a walk way all round it and had fencing to stop you falling in by accident when near the house. The kids thought it brilliant that there was a tree house, which they were going to sleep in until they realised how dark it can get when you don't have all the light polution that we have in most areas where we live. Next to that and acting as a buffer to the road was a huge field with slide and swing. We enjoyed playing catch and boules, etc here. We had intended doing a bit of travelling and such like, but enjoyed the house and pool so much we hardly ventured out. The grounds were immaculately maintained by George, a local expat who was happy to answer any questions we might have had, and from whom you can purchase his home grown veggies. Did we have any niggles, yes but only a few minor ones; First, foremost and beyond the owners control were the flies, however there were a few fly zapper machines strategically placed which were effective. (There were normally about 6 or 7 flies at anyone time, and once windows were closed, the fly swatters that were at the house and the zappers got shut of those still inside.) Second, there were a lot of the flag stones around the pool that were loose, in reality they all could have done with lifting and re-laying, however it did not detract from our enjoyment. Third, we found the tourist information literature to have been piled up over several years and not thinned out, which made it a chore looking through. Fourth, we had asked before hand about French to UK plug adaptors, we were told there were plenty, but if they were there, they were well hidden and we didn't find them, fortunately we had a couple of our own. Fifth, we thought for a house that could cater for 10, that four sunbeds, all of which could have done with a bit of TLC, wasn't enough. One bit we had been looking forward to was the hammock on the patio, but someone had either broken it and opted not to inform George or Paula or it had been taken, as a result of this and out of their control it was not available. Lets get back to the good bits, on a Sunday there is a Pizza van by the village hall, which can be personally recommended, especially the Roquefort cheese pizza. 3 decent supermarkets within 5 miles, 1 in Moncoutant and 2 in Cerizay, one in Cerizay being open Sunday mornings. There is a bakery in the village open everyday for bread and cakes, along with a tabac and pharmacy. Puy du Fou, approx 17 miles away, was a brilliant day out, and it was well worth staying for the Cinescenie, there are no rides, we were there from 10 am till midnight and the kids thought it was the best thing since sliced bread, as did I. As I said earlier we didn't do much else because we were enjoying being at the house so much. Would I recommend this property to friends and relatives, a most resounding yes. Would I go back again, again a most resounding yes, however due to wanting to see other parts of France we may not get round to it for a while. I thought the owner, Paula was very helpful, contacting us regularly, the house was wonderful and thoughtfully designed. The village and the house location within it was great. We have had a brilliant time, and while playing with the kids and enjoying ourselves everyday, we have still managed to thoroughly relax. The kids rated it 9 out of 10, saying nothing can be perfect, even though they had nothing bad to say at all. We can't say how good value for money it is as we do not have a bench mark to work against, all we can say is we felt it was good value. I would like to thank Paula and her family for making our first foreign holiday in 7 years a real, real treat, we wanted our first big family holiday for several years to be a special one and La Lac Maison certainly helped it to be just that. Response: Dear Gavin and family Just received your trip advisor review for La 'Lac' Maison and wanted to say 'thank you' for your kind words and very detailed review. We are so glad you enjoyed the house, its facilities and location as much as we ourselves do. We will most certainly look into the couple of minor points you raised regarding number of sun beds, etc. and are just sorry that someone had obviously 'permanently borrowed' our hammock! We will certainly look at replacing it for next season and try and keep hold of it this time! It is so nice to hear that someone's holiday was a success. With thanks and best regards to you all.
