About this location
The Poitou-Charentes region
The Deux-Sèvres is often fondly referred to as one of France's best-kept secrets. And with good reason. This largely undiscovered region has a rich agricultural landscape of fertile fields, lakes and woods and an abundance of châteaux and water mills. The climate is generally very good, with plenty of sunshine.
Within the region there are many tourist attractions so if you feel like going out for the day there's plenty of choice. Here are just a few examples (with approximate distance from cottage in brackets)
Puy du Fou (20 miles) A 100-acre theme park where historic battles are spectacularly re-created. Chillingly realistic with impressive horsemanship. People come from all over the world to see this! For more info go to www.puydufou.com
Futuroscope (45 miles) A futuristic theme park which uses modern technology to provide lifelike experiences. Simulated rides let you experience exciting thrills and spills whilst still strapped safely in your seat! For more info go to www.futuroscope.com
Loire Valley (40 miles) Acres of vineyards and many elegant châteaux with charming gardens, many open to public. Try Montreuil Bellay, Chenonceau or Ussé (where the story of Sleeping Beauty is said to have originated). For more info go to www.experienceloire.com
Marais Poitevin (50 miles) Take a punt along one of the many canals & waterways in this attractive area known as 'Green Venice' because of an abundance of emerald-green duckweed floating on its many waters. For more info go to www.maraispoitevin.fr
Nantes (60 miles) A cosmopolitan city with several fine galleries & museums and some impressive architecture including the Château des Ducs de Bretagne. Take the tourist train or stroll along 'les allees', a maze of cobbled streets in the old quarter flanked by pavement cafes. For more info go to www.nantes-tourisme.com
La Rochelle (70 miles) A picturesque old fishing port with dozens of quayside restaurants and many interesting monuments

Bressuire, a thriving market town, offers a variety of shops, bars and restaurants and also a twice-weekly market. Its lively centre is just a few minutes walk away from the cottage. A new swimming pool complex has recently opened in the town with several pools (including an outdoor pool when weather is fine) plus jacuzzi and flume. Next to it is a new theatre featuring plays, concerts & musicals. The town also has tennis courts and two fully-equipped gyms. Less than a mile away is the Bocapole (arts centre) which houses a theatre/concert hall, 10-pin bowling alley, multi-screen cinema (with some screenings in English) and restaurant. There is a golf driving range and compact golf course (9 holes with 18 tees) within 5 minutes drive.
Just 300 metres from the cottage is the 11th century Chateau of Bressuire. Once boasting 38 towers, the chateau was at one time taken by the English and later recaptured by the French in a blood-thirsty battle! It is now host to regular exhibitions and festivals, including 'Le Highland Games' in June and a bi-annual sculpture competition in July. There are a variety of other local festivals and fêtes throughout June, July August and September including an open-air concert near the station every Friday night throughout July (free admission), a vintage car race and a music festival.
Stretching out in both directions from the base of the chateau, is the Coulée Verte. This unspoiled area of natural beauty, teeming with wildlife, includes several kilometres of footpaths and cycling tracks which wind their way through woods, along riverbanks and around lakes, past several old water mills and often past the substantial herd of local goats who like to perch precariously on steep outcrops of rock to graze!
With its warm and friendly people and its proximity to numerous tourist attractions Bressuire makes an ideal base for a relaxing holiday.

"Ideal location to explore the area and beyond."
Stayed here in October 2010 as we were completing a house purchase nearby. We have stayed in quite a few gites during our house hunting time and both agreed that this was one of the most comfortable and welcoming of them all. Hugh and Dorothy were most hospitable and we knew they were on hand if we needed them but were not intrusive. What was really useful for us was the ease of walking into Bressuire for dinner/lunch etc and it gave us an excellent view of our prospective nearest town. Discovered we needed to return to complete our purchase and Dorothy was able to accommodate us after Christmas even though her family were due out. We had no hesitation in returning here and even though the weather was very cold we were warm and cosy. The bedroom is quite spacious and I have to admit we took pictures of the en-suite for our own en-suite! We would not hesitate to recommend a stay at La Paillerie.

"A wonderful holiday in this delightful Deux-Sevres cottage"
My wife and I have just returned from spending a fortnight in La Paillerie. I thought it would be helpful to future holiday makers to describe the cottage and the things you can do in the area.
Before our stay, I had considerable contact with the owners. The responses I received were prompt and considered, inspiring confidence that we were going to have a most enjoyable stay.
The cottage is accurately described and we found it to be very clean and comfortable. The owners, who live nearby, have thoughtfully restored the property to provide delightful holiday accommodation. The living space downstairs is spacious and welcoming. The kitchen, whilst small, provides every facility needed for a self-catering holiday. Upstairs, the large bedroom has plenty of space for storage. The bathroom is modern with a walk-in shower ( and ample hot water at a very reasonable pressure – no running around trying to get wet!). The wifi proved to be a real boon – keeping in touch with family was a breeze.
Our preferred holiday making involves plenty of walking and cycling. There are many opportunities to participate in these pursuits (as well as a storage room for the bikes). We walked from the cottage to visit local lakes. Within a few kilometres there are lots of easy-to-follow walking routes, none of which were overtaxing (10-12 km was the usual length). The joy of seeing (and smelling!) the bocage will remain with us for many a year. We also cycled the full length of the Voie Verte – a 35 km disused railway line. This is a fantastic facility with gentle gradients and curves (and no traffic!)
Living on the edge of town proved to be a very convenient choice. The local supermarket, a very short drive away, was a great asset. The nearby chateau provided an inspiring vista every time we set out for a day's exploration.
During our stay, we spoke to the owners on a number of occasions. They were both attentive and unobtrusive – the ideal combination. My wife thoroughly enjoyed sampling the fresh figs, thoughtfully provided from the owners' garden.
I would have no hesitation in recommending this property to future holiday makers. You will be assured of the warmest of welcomes and a carefree holiday in this little known part of France.
