A bohemian retreat and the highest inhabited house in Wales, Avalon Lodge is a quirkily-elegant listed building set in the Brecon Beacons National Park which was formerly the HQ of the waterboard when the rservoird in the area were being built. A vibrant and colourful interior with several original paintings and lots of books and log fires in most rooms....including in the bathroom! A walker's paradise placed close to the start of the popular Horseshoe Walk, you can walk the top of PenyFan in less than an hour from the front door. A stream runs through the garden. A recording studio is situated in the grounds but otherwise the nearest neighbour is 2 miles away. No light pollution makes Avalon Lodge the perfect place for stargazing! Talybont on Usk with the award-winning traditional Star Pub is 7 miles away. Just 45 minutes from Cardiff, nevertheless, Avalon Lodge is the perfect place to get away from it all. The Powys/Brecon Beacons region

Avalon Lodge is situated just a short walk away from the Roman Road which is the start of the very popular 'horseshoe walk' encompassing Pen y Fan, and almost 3,000ft the highest peak in South Wales. In an area of outstanding, natural and unspoiled beauty, we are right in the middle of the Brecon Beacons National Park. walking, cycling, boating on the Brecon and Monmouth Canal, horse riding and gold are popular activities. Hay on Wye, the town that is the world's bookshop capital, is 25 miles away. Brecon, with its theatre, cinema and lovely quirky shops and cathedral, is just 14 miles away. Crickhowell, the pretty market town used in several TV programmes, is 14 miles away and 25 miles away sees you in Abergavenny.

When you stay at Avalon, be aware that there is no light pollution; the nearest street light is some 4 miles away. This means that when conditions are right you get a spectacular panoramic view of the night sky. The Brecon Beacons was recently designated the first Dark Skies Reserve in the UK; if you've never seen a shooting star before, this is the place for you.

Fancy eating out? Talybont has 3 pubs, including the award-winning Star Inn which has won Best Pub in Wales for the last 4 years. The Travellers Rest is a great place for a 'special' dinner, just a short walk up the towpath from The Star.

May sees the Hay on Wye Literary festival; August, the world-famous Brecon Jaz Festival; September, the best food festival in Europe at Abergavenny.
