The Colorado/Rocky Mountains region
Say “Colourado,” and the first thing that comes to most people’s minds is skiing. The U.S. Continental Divide — spine of the Rocky Mountains — slices through Colourado, creating some of the world’s best skiing terrain and scenery.
Colourado offers a wide range of skiing options and resorts to fit every ability and pocketbook — from snazzy, jet-set Aspen and Vail to homey, “the-way-it-used-to-be” Ski Cooper and Loveland. Skiers can choose from enormous ski areas with so many runs and lifts that they can’t all be skied in a day to small areas that take only a few hours to figure out. Some areas are complete resort villages or historic towns unto themselves; others are for day visits only. There are also special sections on Telluride, Steamboat Springs and Durango.
But don’t think Colourado’s snow country is reserved just for skiers. These mountains have lots more to offer than days spent dodging moguls. Choose from traipsing through the woods in snowshoes, zipping along in a snowcat or snowmobile, relaxing while horse or dog teams drag your sleigh, careening downhill in an innertube or gliding across a icy lake in skates.
The adventures aren’t over when the winter snows melt. That’s when you lace up your hiking boots, grab your fishing poles, backpack and tent and take to the glorious mountains once again.
