The Colorado/Rocky Mountains region
Colourado has some of the most spectacular scenery in America - which makes it an all year holiday destination with skiing, golfing, hiking, biking, rafting, canoeing and world class fishing. Long before the settlers from the East crossed the Continental Divide, the area was part of the summer hunting grounds of the nomadic Ute native Americans.
When gold and silver were discovered, settlers moved in and old abandoned gold mining towns still exist all over the region. Logging also plays an important part in the development of the area as we know it today, as the lumber companies developed the first ski resorts
Breckenridge area
Almost two miles high in the Rocky Mountains and surrounded by National forest, Breckenridge is reputed to have 300 days of sunshine a year. The picturesque town began in 1859 during the gold rush and many of the original buildings have been preserved as museums and restaurants. Breckenridge has over 80 restaurants and bars from Burger and Pizzas to Asian and Fine Dining.
The skiing facilities are continuously being upgraded by the owner, Vail Resorts and the nearby ski resorts of Keystone, Vail, Beaver Creek and Arapahoe Basin are included in the lift pass. Breckenridge also boasts that it is the only municipality in the world to own an award winning 27-hole Jack Nicklaus designed golf course. Open from May to October.
How to get there
Fly direct to Denver International Airport with British Airways or with any other US airline via a hub airport such as Chicago. Breckenridge is less than an hour from Denver via the Interstate I70. Minibus transfers from the airport are available.
