The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

The Dordogne: One of the most popular regions in France, the Dordogne is a landscape of gently rolling hills, lush little valleys and miles of woodland. The intimate Drone Valley, which lies within the so-called Perigord Vert on the west side of the Dordogne, is tranquil and unspoiled and benefits from a particularly sunny climate.

Climate: The climate is temperate: mild winter, spring and autumn, hot dry summer. Average temperatures are: May 21C, June 24C, July and August 26C, September 23C, October 18C, but temperatures of 20C in February, March and November are not unknown.

Places of Interest: Along the Dronne Valley there are numerous places to visit, starting with the unforgettable little town of Brantome which is dominated by an ancient abbey overlooking the river. Interesting chateaux include those of Bourdeilles, Château-L’Eveque, Puyguilhem, Hautefort and Villebois Lavalette, while Excideuil boasts a fortress, and a little further afield, Aubeterre has a fascinating and atmospheric monolithic church. There are also some great caves to explore. The picture-perfect village of St Jean de Cole has been used as the setting for many period films, and Perigueux is an excellent centre for shopping or simply mooching around the squares of the old quarter.

Restaurants: The stars of Perigord cuisine include foie gras, truffles (Sorges has a truffle museum and a truffle restaurant), and duck, but everything can be found around here, from the freshest fish to flavourful Provencal cooking. Paussac has a local restaurant, and there are countless other possibilities – from the most humble to the most extravagant – within a half-hour’s drive. Riverside restaurants abound in Brantome, and the old town of Perigueux teems with excellent eateries.

Local Markets: Riberac has a splendid Friday market, with fare ranging from clothing to camembert, and there are other markets in Brantome and Perigueux.

Things to do: Canoeing on the pretty Drone river is a popular local activity (several possible starting points), and the area around Paussac is a paradise for rock-climbers (the village has a rock-climbing centre).

There are many delightful walks around Loubazac (maps provided) or you can cycle to the local villages. There is also horseriding nearby.

"Fantastic house, authentic AND comfortable!"

This house is really a fantastic place for family holidays or for a stay with friends. It's beautifully located in a quiet little hamlet with a very private garden and a well kept swimming pool. … More

"The Figuier"

wonderful stay calm. The owner is discreet, delicate and very attentive to the welfare of its tenants. Many roads ballads around the cleanness. Beautiful area and very warm house.
