About this location
The Dordogne region
The area abounds with rivers, greenery and prehistoric sites, small picturesque villages, with many weekly markets, where fresh food and other produce abound.
Villars prides itself on:
La Grotte de Villars: prehistoric paintings in cave system filled with stalagmites and stalactites
Chateau de Puyguilhem: 15th century Renaissance chateau
Eglise St. Martial: medieval village church
Abbaye de Boschaud: ruined Cistercian monastery
Events in Villars 2013 include: April 27 Classical piano concert Frédéric Vaysse-Knitter in Eglise St. Martial; June 15 Jazz Under the Stars concert at Abbaye de Boschaud; August 15 afternoon World Music concert at Abbaye de Boschaud; August 17 & 18 Fetes de Villars with fireworks over Chateau de Villars on Sunday night August 18; Sunday September 15 Flanerie Artistique with creative artists all over the village and at Abbaye de Boschaud.
Brantome is the 'Venice' of the Perigord. Its Abbey was founded by Emperor Charlemagne, following earlier settlements by hermits. The old town, with its small streets and colourful Friday market, sits on an island created by the monks who cut a canal to separate their monastery from the town. Nowadays the waterways are filled with canoes, passing by in front of the Abbey and monastery, often on their way down river to Bourdeilles.
There is so much to enjoy in this area - the small villages of Bourdeilles. St Jean de Cole, as well as the capital of the Dordogne department, Perigueux. Its cathedral was the model for Paris' Sacre-Coeur. Saturday Market Day is a natural meeting place for people in the region.
Also visit Chateau de Hautefort. Chancelade Abbey. Sarlat. Les Eysies. Bergerac. Bordeaux.
