The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region
ACQUITAINE is a fascinating region and the Dordogne perhaps the most interesting part of it.
Both the Dordogne itself as well as the Bordeaux region are home to many fine wine making chateaux, which can be visited and wines sampled!
The area is full of historic sites and buildings to visit - perhaps the most famous is the caves at Lascaux. There are also fascinating caves at Villars, only 10km from La Maison d'Amis. Most of the important chateaux can be visited.
In the summer especially there are numerous concerts and similar events. Perigueux has a world renowned festival of mime each year.
The Dordogne is famed for good eating with a large chouce of restaurants within easy driving distance. Specialities include foie gras and duck, mushrooms ( cepes ) and traditional local recipes.
The Brantome area
The Brantome area
Brantome, the Venice of the Dordogne is the perfect town to have on your doorstep. It has all the practical features like supermarkets, banks, tourist office, post office but is also simply a wonderfully beautiful town to potter about. Whether you want to rent a canoe and enjoy the views from the river, or sit drinking coffee and people-watch, or go on a boat ride and visit the bell tower.. there really is lots to do.
There are activities for the more energetic such as canoing, tennis, a play ground and park, horseriding.. and the bustling Friday market is a must!
There are also two superb lakes close by.. with a fantastic beach, swimming platforms, canoeing, water skiing.. picnic areas and walks.. perfect for all the family!

We stayed here for two weeks, myself, husband and daughter of ten. We were warmly welcomed on arrival late at night. The owners were very helpful and friendly and ensured that we had everything that we needed for a comfortable stay. The photographs do not really reflect the charm of this house, especially its location. The house is part of an old farmhouse associated with a nearby chateau, now ruined. The grounds are extensive with beautiful trees, a lake, lovely paths for walking and plenty interesting wildlife. The interior is very cool in warm weather. There is a comfortable living/dining room with television, sky box and DVD player. WiFi is not provided, however, we were able to connect from the main house, however, the signal was poor. The upstairs bedrooms and bathrooms are spacious, freshly decorated and very clean and comfortable. The swimming pool has a lovely patio with deck chairs which is not reflected in the photographs. The pool is also covered which means that it is comstantly warm, the owners removed part of the cover when it got very hot and this was very refreshing to swim in. There is a lovely grassy area with beautiful trees outside the house, the owners provided garden furniture and we spent a lot of time sitting there relaxing under a huge chestnut tree. The beautiful town of Brantomme is about a twenty minute drive on a very pretty and scenic road, there are other small towns which are closer with all amenities available. The only criticism I have of this house is the kitchen which is very small with only one surface area for food preparation, having said that it is sufficient for preparing simple holiday meals. Otherwise, the kitchen has everything you might need including large fridge freezer and dishwasher, plenty of crockery and cooking utensils. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this charming holiday house and especially enjoyed the beautiful and tranquil location. |
