The Dordogne region

The region is steeped in history and has retained its character with good food often based on duck washed down with local wine, perhaps following a starter including the local black gold..truffles. Richard Lionheart was killed at Chalus by an archer from the fortified town of Nontron, the old Barons of Bordeilles used to fight dragons in the Holyland without leaving their beds after inhaling certain vapours! There are huge numbers of Chateaux in the area whose character is largely preserved by Batiments de France who allow no unsuitable development within 2km of any ancient site.Brantome is a very pretty town and well earns its name as "The Venice of Perigord". Perigord Vert takes its name from the Forests and greenery which abound in the area.

Nontron has 3 supermarkets, we recommend Super U for all your everyday needs. There is also a lively doll, puppet, games and toy Museum which even has the French equivalent of the satirical spitting image puppets! There are leaflets on all sorts of activities in LA CROIX and more information is always available in the Tourist office in Nontron or Brantome.

Brantome is a good place to start a canoe trip to Bordeilles you may get wet but it is a wonderful gentle family get driven back, so one way, downstream is good. Brantome is well worth walking round, with its atmospheric abbey which was founded by Charlemagne (742-814).

Just North of Nontron is the beach and lake of St Estephe which is well worth a visit as is the Grotto at Villars where you can marvel at the huge stalactites in this enormous cave system which was only discovered in 1953. Also in the caves are 17,000 year old paintings. The admission fee includes a commentary and is good value.

For golfers, we suggest the course at Chancelade which is only about 18km away.

For the teen, what about Karting at Teyac, near Javerlac where there is good track and fast machines. Cool.

There is a jungle gym at the Foret in Thenon which is good fun for children.

There are lots of activities in the area during the season, from fishing to tennis and horse riding...and then there is the Wine, or even Brandy tours and tastings are available, but then you could always enjoy a nice glass in the peaceful country location of LA CROIX on your own terrace and relax

"Perfect Getaway for a Large Family Group"

La Croix more than lived up to its description in terms of its size, comfort and facilities. It is a beautiful villa with ample space to spread out, both inside and out, well proportioned bedrooms, numerous bathrooms and toilets, a large living room for everyone to get together, spacious decking areas and gardens, and a lovely swimming pool. In every respect, it provides ideal accommodation for a large family or extended family group. The location is peaceful and secluded, but within a few kilometres of Nontron, which offers excellent supermarkets, and Brantome, which is one of the most picturesque towns in the Northern Dordogne. The owners, Lester and Berenice, could not have been more kind or attentive to our needs and clearly take enormous pride not only in their beautiful home, but also in ensuring that their guests have everything they need. Our party included two closely related families and two friends and we all had a great holiday. Our only regret was having to leave!

"Lovely House and Location Shame about the owners"

We stayed at the property in August of 2011. The house and grounds were lovely as was its secluded location. Would have been nice to have a bit more life in the local village (a shop or something)What… More

"Ideal luxury holiday home for our extended family."

12 of us, ranging from 2 years to 65 years stayed at La Croix for one week in August. The property really feels like a home and has high quality fixtures and fittings to ensure we lacked nothing. It is remarkable in having a huge amount of space so that there is plenty of room to get together but also, and importantly, there is plenty of space for people to have a quiet time on their own if they wish. Luxurious and spacious bathrooms are plentiful too with most rooms being ensuite. I'd also like to give special mention to the very comfortable beds! - such a pleasure to find in a holiday home but this is a benefit of renting somewhere that is clearly the much loved home of the owners, Lester & Berenice. They were attentive, friendly and generous hosts - discreetly ensuring we had everything we needed and even bringing freshly cut vegetables from La Croix's large garden. The garden and pool are ideal for the children who enjoyed them tremendously - lots of different birds & insects as well as lizards to keep the curious little ones interested in their surroundings. All in all we had a superb holiday in a wonderful house in a beautiful location.
