Villa Lavande is set on a small exclusive courtyard domaine on the site of an old monastery. It is surrounded by landscaped grounds with ancient trees, mature gardens and benefits from a tranquil location minutes away from the bustle of historic Brantome. There is a delightful shared swimming pool within 100 metres of our villa which is reached via a lavander lined footpath and has a separate shower and WC, a shaded area and plenty of loungers on which to relax and enjoy the shimmering crystal clear water.

This 2 bed-roomed villa is comprised of a very large open plan living/kitchen and dining space downstairs and a double bedroom, with ensuite, and triple bedroom, and family bathroom, upstairs. There is a superb covered south facing terrace opening onto the rear garden providing an ideal spot for a BBQ and relaxing in peace well into the evening.

The little town of Brantome, described in guide books as the Venice of Perigord, is a short walk away (15 minutes along way-marked pathways) and offers a lovely French market, cobbled streets and the River Dronne that wraps itself around the entire town. Sitting in the market square, listening to the bells of the abbey chime, watching boats drift by and absorbing the atmosphere is a perfect way to spend a lazy day. Alternatively you could hire kayaks or bikes and explore the charming countryside, or visit the multitude of chateau, or even go underground to explore some of the best examples of cave painting in one of the many fascinating caves in the Dordogne.

The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

Villa Lavande is situated within easy walking distance of the stunning historical town of Brantome within the northern part of the Dordogne, described as the Perigord Vert (the Green Perigord) denoting the fact that it has the most vegetation and forested areas of the whole of the Dordogne. This inland region is a rich area of woodlands, caves, deep gorges cut by the many rivers, and chateaux from the turbulent history such as a the Hundred Years' War, making it a popular country holiday destiniation for families, outdoor pursuits enthusiasts and those interested in exploring the history of the region.

Brantome

Brantome is described as the Venice of Perigord because it is an island surrounded by the River Dronne. In the 8th century Benedictine monks moved into caves at the bottom of the cliff before founding an imposing abbey. Today the bells of France's oldest campanile ring out as locals and visitors stroll along the river and through the beautiful narrow cobbled streets in this historic town, or sit in one of the many restaurants/bistros. On a Friday (and also a Tuesday during the Spring and Summer) there is a substantial weekly market within Brantome which sells anything from cheese to antique lamp shades. A 16th Century bridge links the abbey to its gardens and close by there is a cave called Grotte du Judgement Dernier which has a 15th century carved relief of the Last Judgement.

The ancient capital of the area, Perigueux is just 25 minutes away from Brantome and provides one of the largest urban conservation areas in France. It is easy to lose a day or so exploring the weaving cobbled streets and spectacular Cathedrale Saint-Front.

Bourdeilles is a 10-15 minute drive along the River Dronne from Brantome. It is an extremely pretty village with dramatic 13th century chateau and is home to many artists. It is well worth a visit. You can hire canoes from both Brantome and Bourdeilles. Another pretty local village is St Jean de Cole, again 15 minutes away, and recognised as one of the most attractive villages in France.

This is an ideal base for recreational cyclists with many way-marked trails and 3 great off-road trails called Voie Vertes (old railway tracks and canal towpaths that have been converted for pedestrian or cycle use) within easy striking distance:

The Thiviers-Saint-Pardoux-la-Riviere Voie Verte is a 17km stretch of converted 19th century railway line that links Saint-Pardoux-la-Rivière to Thiviers via Milhac-de-Nontron and Saint-Jean-de-Côle. It's great for summer cycling as it's well shaded by oaks, pines and acacias.

Voire Verte des Berges de l'Isle is a 15km ride crossed through Perigueux between Trélissac and Marsac-sur-Isle, offering a paved surface along the river through the heart of historic Perigueux. It's a wonderful urban route that also links some of the city's key parks, gardens, and sports venues.

Chalus to Oradour-sur-Vagres Voie Verte is a 13km route through the conservation area of the Parc Naturel Régional Périgord-Limousin.

Cycle hire is widely available from Brantome, Bourdeilles, Nontron, Thiviers etc.
