The West Country / Devon region
The area is ideal for beachcombers and walkers with the nearby beach backed by magnificent cliffs with coastal paths to Beer and Sidmouth. Branscombe is famous for being situated on the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Coastline. The village is set in a beautiful valley meandering down to the sea, surrounded by National Trust land.
Branscombe area
Branscombe is located at the meeting point of two valleys or combes, and this is how it derives its name. It’s picturesque rows of thatched cottages, adorned with hanging baskets and climbing roses meander down a magnificent valley nearly all the way to the sea and the village is believed to be the longest village in England. It is this location that makes Branscombe one of the most beautiful and scenic locations on the South coast.
Along with its natural beauty Branscombe boasts a number of unique features. The Great Sea Side Farm, a 14th century farmhouse is the location of the Branscombe Vale Brewery. A thatched working Norman forge is the only one of its kind left in the country. Another historic building is the old bakery where, once inside, you will be find open fires, baking tins and the storage jars of yester year.
How to get there
Take any of the roads signposted to Branscombe from the A3052 between Sidmouth and Colyford. Travel past the Three Horse Shoes (closed) and take the second turning right. This is clearly signposted to Branscombe and is at 30’ to the road just before a slight bend. Follow lane to junction marked Woodhead Cross and turn right down a steep hill. Continue down the hill and along the lane until you arrive at a row of thatched cottages on your left. At the junction keep well to the right and turn left down the hill.
You will see The Masons Arms directly in front of you - Parsons Lane is the road a little further on, on the right hand side of the fork (signposted as a no through road).
