Long Marton Station
from £43 /night help
House | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 6
This is a converted railway station on the spectacular Settle - Carlisle Railway, three miles north of Appleby in Cumbria. Steam specials pass right by most weekends and sometimes midweek, but bear in mind that diesel passenger and freight services use the line too.
The property has gas central heating and is double glazed, with an air conditioning unit in the lounge in case we ever get another hot summer! Being in the Settle - Carlisle Railway Conservation Area, it has been painstakingly restored and furnished in the original Victorian style. The owners live in the other half of the Station building, so your hoilday home is effectively semi-detached. There is a plethora of railway memorabilia throughout; pictures, photographs, books, model locomotives etc.
It's ideally situated for the Lake District, North Pennines, Yorkshire Dales and Scottish Borders, and is close to open countryside, the Cumbria Cycleway and the Pennine Way, so is ideal for cyclists and walkers too. Pets (by arrangement) are welcome. The local pub, the Masons Arms, is only 200 yards away and offers excellent value evening meals (three courses £10.45!) and traditional ales. Also in the village is Kath Earl's superb bakery selling all manner of pies and cakes.
Downstairs there is a large lounge with the original marble fireplace (so you can enjoy a real fire), dining room with original fireplace, kitchen and bathroom with shower over the bath. Tke kitchen has an electric cooker, fridge freezer, microwave and washing machine. Both lounge and dining room enjoy panoramic views of the Lake District hills. In the lounge is a 32" Freeview TV with a DVD/VCR and a music centre, with records, tapes, CDs, DVDs, video cassettes, games, jigsaws etc.
Upstairs is the main bedroom with a king-size bed, a single bed and a TV (soon), plus an en-suite WC and basin, and a twin bedroom.
An extra single bed can be installed in either bedroom if there are six in your party, and there is also a a large cot if needed (plus high chair and stairgate).
Outside is off-road parking for up to four cars and a large lawn with bench, parasol and BBQ
To get your holiday off to the right start we provide a pint of semi-skimmed milk, a basket of wood and kindling for the fire, plus a parking disc for use in Appleby, Penrith etc.

The Cumbria region
The Eden Valley is off the beaten track, and so is much quieter than the Lake District proper, although only half an hour's drive away. With the Pennines to the east and the Lake District to the west, the River Eden runs through or near the towns of Kirkby Stephen, Appleby and Penrith to reach the sea at the Solway Firth near the city of Carlisle, 30 miles away from Long Marton.
Long Marton is an unspoiled village three miles from Appleby, still with its own pub, now a fine restaurant as well, although the shop/post office closed some years ago. The Station occupies a commanding position overlooking the village and on the far side of the railway, offering a high degree of privacy.
The nearest shops and restaurants are in Appleby, the old county town of Westmorland, which still retains its charm as a town which hasn't changed for a hundred years or more. Penrith, ten miles away, has Sainsburys and Morrisons supermarkets, whereas Appleby has a Co-op and a Spar, with indivdual local shops such as Dowdings butchers and Stephensons greengrocer, well worth patronising (try the Cumberland sausages at Dowdings for example).

"Home away from home"
Absolutely love staying here. It's cosy, warm and in a great location. Dog friendly too. It feels like when I was little and was allowed to stay at my grandmothers. Lovely.… More
