About this location
Northern Portugal region
There is so much to see around the Minho region (whose coastal area is known as Costa Verde or The Green Coast) and, as Casa do Alto is in the center of this region it is an ideal base for this area of the country.
The climate is mild (average minima 6 C in January and average maxima 28 C in July) and it is a transition climate from Mediterranean, Atlantic and Continental. For this reason almost everything grows in this region.
Casa do Alto is a large stone house (750 m2) in a farm (1 hectare) situated on top of a hill and it is within 6 km of the city centre of the historical, bustling city of Braga (3rd city in PT) and 50 km from the city of Porto (2nd city in PT). There is a bus service available from Oporto International Airport into Braga city bus station. Road and rail links are also excellent (A3, A7 and A11 motorways).
There are exquisite views from all sides of Casa do Alto. A part of the old Roman road into Braga is right on the back doorstep. The stone “eira” (or patio where they used to dry cereals) is one of the largest in the Minho area (484 m2) and many memorable events have taken place within this large area.
The archaeological site of Citânia de Briteiros, dating from Celtic and Roman times is close to Casa do Alto (15 km) and the superb natural scenic Peneda/ Gerês National Park is also easy to reach from Casa do Alto (30 km).
The seaside resorts of Povoa de Varzim (with a casino)/ Vila do Conde and Esposende/ Ofir are about 20 minute's drive away and there is a riverside beach within 5 minutes' drive from the property on the river Cavado.
Braga is the nearest big city to Casa do Alto and is an exciting city with many historical sites to visit, such as the oldest Cathedral in Portugal. Excellent local and international gastronomy can be enjoyed in the many restaurants available in and around Braga, served with a wide range of the exquisite wines which Portugal is renowned for.
In the outskirts of Braga there is a “touristic triangle” composed by the three famous sanctuaries of “Bom Jesus”, “Sameiro” and “Stª Marta” each on top of its own hill, and these are well worth a visit.
Modern day Braga has a long and rich history. It was known as Bracari under the Celts (iron age) and Bracara Augusta under the Romans (founded in 20 BC). In Roman times it was capital of the administrative area Conventus bracarensis, the south western area of the Roman province of Gallaecia. It has always been the most important religious centre in Portugal and its old seminaries educated the missionaries that took European culture and religion to the four corners of the World since the 15th Century. The Faculty of Philosophy and Theology of the Portuguese Catholic University, the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory and the University of Minho are all located in Braga. These are centers of high learning with outstanding research in many areas ranging from philosophy to nano-science, biotechnology, life sciences and computer & information technologies.
