The Costa Verde region
The Costa Verde is a region whose name perfectly evokes its beautiful countryside, unspoilt coastlines and lush landscapes of rich green valleys, vineyards and seemingly endless pine forests. Portugal's "Green Coast" stretches from the border with Spain in the north, down to just south of Porto, the country's second largest city. On the Costa Verde you will find the place of life is leisurely and steeped in tradition. Smallholders tend their plots in ways unchanged for many generations; fishermen take to the Atlantic in locally-built boats whose design would be recognised by their forefathers. Costa Verde is blessed with a wealth of monuments to the past, ancient convents, churches, monasteries, and picturesque castels tower above the landscape. CLIMATE The Costa Verde benefits from wet, mild winters which have created a wonderfully fertile temperatures reaching 32ºC.
Braga area
Antigo Paco Episcopal - in the centre of town; it was the Archbishop's Palace but now houses the library and town archives. It's got wonderful facades dating back to the 14th., 17th., and 18th., centuries. If you are into architecture, this is the perfect place to breathe it in.
Igreja Do Bom Jesus - it's well worth a visit; it's about half an hour's walk from town and you can get a super ride on the funicular railway here. As you go up you pass some amazing things, like the Staircase of the Five Senses, loads of statues, symbols, and inscriptions, and the Chapel of Simon the Cyrenian. It's well worth spending a day here; you can get refreshment once on top.
Cathedral - Portugal's oldest, right in the centre of town. It's got loads of old paintings and relics. There's the original iron cross which was on the ship that discovered Brazil in 1500, strange though, there's also some brain boxes containing - not brainy people but brainy people's brains from long ago.
