Our light, spacious, open-plan apartment is in the Shorewalk complex, situated on the beautiful central Gulf Coast of Florida.  Shorewalk comprises 2-story buildings on 30 acre grounds with mature trees.  Paths, well-lit at night, meander around 6 stocked lakes to lead guests to pools and jacuzzis, lighted tennis courts, basketball court, bocce ball (boules), and a clubhouse with billiard room, table tennis, TV, library, games, and a barbecue area.

Drive west along Cortez road to the beautiful Gulf beaches of Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key, or south down the Tamiami Trail to the galleries, theatres and marinas of cultured Sarasota.  Take an airboat ride at Myakka state park.  Contact the local astronomical society to see whether they are doing a public viewing. Listen to open-air music at St Armand's Circle or Lakeland.

PLEASE NOTE that on the complex, the following items are not permitted: pets, trailers, RVs, motor homes, trucks, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, boats or jet-skis.  This is an upper-story apartment and is only accessible via an external stair.    The apartment itself is all on one level. The sleeping arrangements are: master bedroom, 1 queen bed; guest bedroom, 2 single beds; lounge, 1 settee converting to a double bed. The minimum rental period is 3 nights.

The Florida region

The Gulf Coast offers one of the best and most relaxed lifestyles anywhere. The weather is great, but it will be hot in summer, it may be stormy in fall, and it may not be sunny ALL the time in winter, although it will usually be warmer than Europe.

The food can be good whether you eat in or out. Fresh fruit especially is wonderful. Florida is famed for its oranges, but honeydew melon or mango are a very special start to the day.

Bradenton, home to the South Florida Museum, is a busy and friendly residential town. Cortez Road abounds with restaurants, many of them serving wonderful seafood. Anna Maria Island is 10 minutes drive away, maybe a little longer if the drawbridge is up to let boats pass. We love going to Coquina Beach, or to Manatee Beach where you can park close to the Cafe most days. The food is good, the coffee ad lib and there is usually a singer around dusk. Great place to watch the sun set over the Gulf.

Sarasota, twelve miles south of Bradenton, has some excellent cultural venues: the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, and the Asolo Theatre are recommended. Sarasota was the winter home of the Ringling Circus, and John & Mabel Ringling built a spectacular home, Ca D'Zan, there. You can see not only the home, but also the art which they collected and which is housed in a gallery. If you like Rubens, del Cairo and Reynolds, go there.

When you're all arted out, head off for Myakka State Park. You will want a full day there. Have an airboat ride; take the "tram" and learn how the vegetation has been changed by the settlers; have a walk up the tower and through the canopy; take a picnic down to Clay Gully.
