The Western Cape region
The Garden Route is a stretch of the south-eastern coast of South Africa. It extends from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to the Storms River in the Eastern Cape. The name comes from the verdant and ecologically diverse vegetation encountered here and the numerous lagoons and lakes dotted along the coast. It includes towns such as Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Nature's Valley; with George, the Garden Route's largest city.
It has an oceanic climate, with mild to warm summers, and mild to cool winters. It has the mildest climate in South Africa and the second mildest climate in the world, after Hawaii, according to the Guinness Book of Records. Temperatures rarely fall below 10°C in winter and rarely climb beyond 28°C in summer. Rain occurs year-round, with a slight peak in the spring months, brought by the humid sea-winds from the Indian Ocean rising and releasing their precipitation along the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma Mountains just inland of the coast.
The Route is sandwiched between the aforementioned mountains and the Indian Ocean. The Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma indigenous forests are a unique mixture of Cape Fynbos and Temperate Forest and offer hiking trails and eco-tourism activities. Nearly 300 species of bird life are to be found in a variety of habitats ranging from fynbos to forest to wetlands.
Ten nature reserves embrace the varied ecosystems of the area as well as unique marine reserves, home to soft coral reefs, dolphins, seals and a host of other marine life. Various bays along the Garden Route are nurseries to the endangered Southern Right Whale which come there to calve in the winter and spring (July to December).
Plettenberg Bay is part of the famous Garden Route that runs up the Eastern Coast of South Africa. With its faultless scenery and beautiful weather is popular with both South Africans and international visitors.
This bustling seaside town is world famous for its beautiful beaches, stunning restaurants and flawless scenery, making it the perfect holiday destination for families and travelers.
The area is an important eco-tourism destination, giving guests the opportunity to whale watch, enjoying the dolphins swimming by, as well as ocean adventures make Plett the No. 1 holiday destination.
It boasts glorious temperate climate all year round. Summers are pleasantly warm with comparatively low humidity, while winters are particularly mild, with year-round rainfall. Spring starts by mid-September. High summer begins from November to March and the warm temperatures peak from December to February at around 30°C. The temperatures start to cool from April although it can still be very pleasant until June. June, July and August are Plettenberg Bay's winter months and although still bright and warm days can also be wet and cold.
A highlight during spring is the arrival of several species of whales, including the rare Southern Right, which breed and calve in the sheltered waters. Plettenberg Bay is one of the top destinations in the world for boat based whale and dolphin watching. Due to the large number of whale and dolphin species found in the bay (five whale and three dolphin species), the Centre for Dolphin Studies is located in Plettenberg Bay. Three species of whale can be seen throughout the year
Besides the normal leisure activities such as golf at the Plettenberg County Club which is right next to Brackenridge Estate and the Goose Valley Golf Club, designed by Gary Player, situated at Keurbooms, there are also a host of other activities available. These include:
