The Lake District
The Lake District is the most popular visitor destination in the UK, offering something for everyone whether you are looking for adventure and outdoor pursuits or something less energetic like a cookery course.
The scenery is stunnning and varies from season to season, with Wordsworth's famous daffodils in Spring or the impressive array of colours in the autumnal trees.
There are many transport links to get to this popular destination and once there you can chose from steam trains, ferries, buses or steamers to enjoy looking at the scenery.
There are many famous people who have links with the Lake District such as Beatrix Potter, Ruskin, Wordsworth and Donald Campbell and there are museams and tours based on their lives in the area.
The nearest town to the house is Bowness which offers a good variety of shops, pubs, restaurants and more, including the World of Beatrix Potter museam, the Steamboat Museam, rowing and motor boat hire and a cinema.
There is an annual Airshow at the Glebe in Bowness usually towards the end of July (please check with Tourist Information on +44 (0)15394 42895 as well as a number of other local events throughout the year.

"Nice cosy cottage in quiet surroundings, good value for money."
Arrived at the property which is a little hidden (hard to find as it is behind the larger rental cottage) though this is nice as there are very few people ever passing by! The caravans nearby really weren't a problem for us though having to share a washing machine was not expected as this was not mentioned on the advert and was somewhat inconvenient.
The cottage is located up a hill and is accessed via gravel roads so ensure you don't bring a vehicle which is too low to the ground with you!
Just beyond the cottage is a hill with sheep and cows. Lovely. You can go for a walk up there and see more of the lake in the distance. It really is beautiful on a clear day and you can see for miles.
We enjoyed our stay in the cottage, it provided all we needed for a comfortable stay and was a perfect distance from Windermere. Not with crowds nearby but it only took 10 minutes (if that) by car to get to the lake. It was also a great location for visiting many other areas within the Lakes. Places we particularly enjoyed were Windermere (Ambleside, Bowness) Ullswater, Keswick. There is lots to do in the area and ample leaflets when you arrive at the property.
We found this to be very good value for money and we were unable to find anywhere cheaper in the lakes in August. We did not have a problem with the energy bill as the previous visitors had, though be warned the heating was left on when we arrived (Middle of summer) and we had to turn it off immediately or else we probably would have been hit with a large bill. The use of the log fire in the evenings was much welcomed and some firewood was provided for this.
The most disappointing part of the stay was the water situation. We arrived to discover we had to boil water before drinking, washing, brushing teeth etc or we had to buy bottled. This was an added expense and we certainly didn't expect it in a place in England!! Had we wanted to wash in dirty water we would have gone abroad! Would have been nice to have been warned about this in advance.
All in all this is a great cottage if you want somewhere which is value for money, in a good location and cosy. If you are wondering whether the lake district is where you want to go then I could not recommend it more highly. We loved our time there, it is such a beautiful place with so much to see and do.
I'm really glad you enjoyed your stay at Bellman Cottage.
Apologies for the water situation, you should have been notified prior to your visit to warn you of the temporary measures in place. The water has in fact been tested totally safe to drink, we have just been advised to keep the precautions in place until all the authority have processed their paperwork. I hope this does not stop you from returning to Bellman Cottage and enjoying our returning customers discount!

"Really lovely cottage in a handy location"
We had a wonderful stay - the cottage was comfortable, very clean, well kitted out, peaceful and the couple looking after us were very friendly. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend it compared to a lot of what's out there - we could see sheep and fields and nothing else from our bedroom and lounge windows which was stunning.
There were just a couple of things that could have been better. Firstly there are actually a number of static caravans and a shower-block outbuilding in the vicinity of the cottage, so we weren't as alone as we had hoped. However the caravans weren't in view from our window and didn't detract much. Secondly despite switching off the heaters (and being cold quite often) we got hit with a £25 energy bill at the end unexpectedly - I think including only £10 worth of electricity is too little with current prices and no gas. Finally the shower was a a bit dribbly.
Thank you very much for your comments - we're glad you enjoyed your stay.
As you note there are a few static caravans near the cottage, however we have found that guests at the cottage rarely notice they are there, as access to the cottage is restricted to the caravaneers.
We try to keep our prices low and this is reflected in the amount of electricity we can include in the price of the holiday, I'm sorry if your bill came as a surprise to you.
Finally, we have addressed the issue with the shower - thank you for bringing it to our attention.
We hope to welcome you back in the near future.

"Lovely cottage in the perfect setting"
Welcome from the caretaker was friendly and efficient. The property was clean and well-kept internally. Outside was clearly being decorated at the time I stayed. It is close enough to Bowness to be convenient, but far enough away that you don't have crowds walking past the door. Love the views from the cottage and the peace and quiet. However, the DVD player was not connected and I couldn't seem to find the relevant cable to connect it so I couldn't use it during my stay.
Thank you for your review, I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. I apologise for the lack of cable for the DVD, if you had contacted the Caretaker during your stay I'm sure we would have been able to fix this problem!
