The Swiss Alps / Vaud/Lake Geneva/Swiss Alps region

The VALAIS is Switzerland’s third-largest canton, occupying the valley – hence the name – of the River Rhône, from its source in the glaciers of the central Alps all the way to its inflow to Lake Geneva. The region has the driest climate, with the lowest rainfall and the most sunshine, of the whole country. Traditional Valaisian-style restaurants complete with window boxes full of geraniums and farm tools as decoration on the walls, serve up the local cheese speciality raclette. The dryness and sunshine of the valley are ideal vine-growing conditions.
Transportation is excellent and excursions are possible by car, train and lake ferry for example it is possible to make a day trip to Chamonix Mont Blanc from Bouveret by train.
The Bouveret area
Le Bouveret is an enchanting Valaisan village famous for its lakeside restaurants, bars and walks as well as the Swiss Vapeur Park (model train paradise) and Aqua Park. Water sports include sailing, windsurfing, water-skiing and rowing. Passenger ferries ply across the lake to a wide variety of interesting locations including Vevey, Montreux and Chateau de Chillon. Villars, Verbier, Zermatt and Chamonix (Mt. Blanc) are all within driving distance or by train excursion. Signposted discovery trails guide hikers and cyclists along numerous valley and mountain paths.
In winter it is possible to go skiing in Torgon (25 minutes drive) or in Portes du Soleil/ Les Crosets (about 40 minutes drive).

We stayed three nights in this lovely flat and wished we had booked more time off. The flat is well situated--literally 2 minutes from the train station and 2 minutes from the high street where we... more |

We have travelled Europe for 2 months and Le Lacustre was the best self-catering accommodation we stayed at. I give it 10 out of 10. The apartment is tastefully furnished and all the bedding/linen etc. was top class. Plenty of crockery and pots/pans for cooking. We felt like we were at home, not missing out on even small luxuries. The view from the apartment is magnificent - one can spend the entire holiday just sitting on the balcony, sipping wine and looking at the lake and the Alps. There are 2 bathrooms in the aparment which is handy when there are more than two people staying - no competition for toilet/shower. The building faces the lake. The building has also the second exit to the back street which has the bakery and shops. We bought fresh bread from the bakery every morning and we only had to travel 2 mins to the bakery. There is a railway line in front of the apartment but the trains are infrequent and do not run at night so there was no noise problem from the trains. The locals like music and there are concerts/bands on weekend. Karaoke... umm not everyone should sing. We had a few chuckles listening. There is a broadband connection in the apartment but we had an iPad. There is free WiFi in Bouveret provided by (I think) the tourist office but the reception is quite patchy. You can get WiFi from the balcony most days but it keeps dropping of. So best to bring a laptop to make use of the broadband connection in the apartment. Plenty of things to do around the area but if you like night clubs etc you make have to go across the lake to Montreax - you either need the car or have to plan your trips carefully as ferries/trains do not run after 8pm. We enjoyed the stay immensely - it is a quiet little place (apart from karaoke nights :)) and the apartment is top notch. |
