The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Dordogne region

The Dordogne, which corresponds to the former province of Perigòrd is itself divided into four regions, the Périgord(s) Noir, Blanc, Vert and Rouge. Its geography and natural resources make it one of the untouched regions of Europe and the newly-formed Parc Naturel Périgord-Limousin aims to conserve it as such. It is a fertile, productive landscape dotted with some of the most beautiful villages and castles in France. The climate is temperate with mild winters and long hot summers. The area is noted for its cuisine, particulary its truffles, foie gras and the local Bergerac wines
The Bouteilles-Saint-Sebastien area
Situated to the west of the Dordogne in the Perigord vert region, the hamlet of Vaumoure overlooks the Lizonne River valley which forms the boundary with the Charente.
Mountain bikes (VTT) can be hired nearby, together with canoes on the nearby rivers. Lake Jemaye in the Double Forest is close by, here can be found water sports, swimming areas, beach, and associated activities.
Aubeterre Sur Dronne a spectacular hilltop medieval village is near here, with restaurants, bars and shops. The River Dronne which it overlooks has a beach with canoes and bicycles for hire.
The region is well known for its antiquities, art, Romanesque architecture and of course its cuisine. In addition to the wine and cognac, foods include foie gras, walnuts, strawberries, truffles, pates and cheeses. There are many attractive markets in the area which supply the local restuarants.
