The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

Perigueux is the capital of the Dordogne region. The medieval part of the town comes alive on Wednesdays and Saturdays when local artisans display their first class produce, including cured meats, truffles, foie-gras and pies or 'pates de Perigueux'. La Cite, once a pivotal Gallo-Roman site of Versunna, is also worth a foray. If you walk up the hill from La Cite you'll come to the Cathedrale St. Front which proved to be a trial run for the architect Abadie who later went on to design the Sacre-Couer in Paris. Angouleme, a cathedral city, used to be dominated by paper mills but now has a thriving tourist industry. The old town occupies a steep sided plateau overlooking a bend in the River Charente. It has many charms. Brantome, the 'Venice of the Perigord' is surrounded by a loop in the River Dronne. The towns pride is its Benedictine Abbey. It's a must see as is St. Emillion, although this means a one and a half hours drive. The landscape around 'La Croix' has changed little over the last century, undulating with fields of sunflowers, maize and many walnut orchards.

Bouteilles-Saint-Sebastien

You will find a large sandy beach on the River Dronne at Aubeterre about 15 minutes drive away. There is a cafe and lots of large trees and canopies if you need to seek shade. You will also find another pleasant river beach of white sand which is well maintained at St Aulaye at about the same distance. la Jemaye is a fantastic lake with a white sandy beach, beautiful sunsets, with a chic resturant perfect for a sun downer.

Verteillac and St. Severin with small shops, banks and post offices are 5-10 minutes away. Riberac, large market town with hypermarkets is 15 mins away. Aubeterre is 15 mins. away. Sunday market, river beach, restaurants off the tree lined square, small Sunday market. Angouleme, Perigueux and Brantome are 40 mins drive away.
