The Central England / Cotswolds / Cheltenham / Gloucester region

Voted the best and the most popular village in the Cotswolds, and often referred to as the "Venice of the Cotswolds" because the River Windrush runs right through the centre with quaint stone bridges criss crossing between the shops and attractions. The combination of this clear sparkling water and the attractive low bridges crossing it create a charming scene, best enjoyed in the quieter times of day and quieter months of the year. Bourton-on-the-Water has many attractions, suitable for visitors of all ages.
The Model Village is a mini replica of the village itself, Birdland Park and Gardens offers woodland, river and gardens inhabited by over 500 birds, and the Cotswold Perfumery is a sensory experience with a difference! There is a good variety of shops, pubs, restaurants and tearooms.
The Bourton on the Water area
Regularly voted one of the prettiest villages in England, Bourton-on-the-Water has more than its share of Cotswold houses and cottages, many of them three hundred years old, some dating back to Elizabethan times four hundred years ago.
Bourton-on-the-Water is only 4 miles from Stow-on-the-Wold and straddles the river Windrush with its series of elegant low bridges beside neat tree-shaded greens and tidy stone banks. Standing back from the river are traditional Cotswolds buildings, many of which are now tourist shops for the day-trippers and visitors.
Bourton-on-the-Water has been described as the 'Little Venice' of the Cotswolds and is one of the most popular tourist spots in the region being serviced by the many shops, cafe's, and attractions.
BOURTON-ON-THE-WATER ATTRACTIONS
Birdland - Is an authentic zoo for birds, with a remarkable collection of penguins, some of which have come from the owner's islands in the South Atlantic. Established by the late Len Hill and is also home to a huge variety of exotic birds
Model Village - Excellent miniature of Bourton using authentic building materials depicting Bourton-on-the-Water as it was in 1937 at 1/9th scale. Other attractions include a perfume factory and model railway exibition.

A comfortable, well equipped cottage in a picturesque location, located close to the town centre. Parking for one small car. "Friendly" pub next door. Lack of washing machine was a disadvantage. When travelling with a limited wardrobe, good washing / drying facilities are essential. We enjoyed our stay and the ambience of the cottage. Response: Many thanks for for your positive review, I'm glad you enjoyed you stay. Just a 2 minute walk from the cottage is Mary's Laundry and they will wash, dry and iron your clothes very quickly at a very reasonable cost (we have all our laundry done there), after all who wants to be doing laundry on holiday ! |

We spent a very enjoyable weekend at Barton Cottage back in September. It's in a good position, just a few minutes walk to the centre of Bourton-on-the-Water; which has plenty of pubs, shops and restaurants as well as a number of interesting attractions. The cottage has been decorated and kitted out well and presented clean and tidy. Basically you get what you see in the pictures on the website. We thought a nice touch was the selection of CDs, books and games which was great for relaxing in the evening with after a day out and about; the local pub is literally just a 30 second walk away as well. There is an attractive wood burner which to be honest was a bit of an art to get going at first, but then I had never used one before. I would recommend taking a few of the fire logs you can get at most supermarkets now, as this was much easier; you probably don't need the heat so much anyway as the central heating kept the place warm and cosy. We were concerned at first that there may be some noise from the nearby road; turned out being only a small village there's hardly any traffic during the night and we had a good nights sleep both nights. As with the burner, I had a bit of trouble trying to figure out how to turn on the heating initially, but then noticed there were full instructions taped to the inside of the door. Suggest you make sure you read these first as it's then all self explanatory. When initially enquiring the owner was very quick to respond and the booking process was very straight forward; they even let us arrive an hour early which was much appreciated. All in all we would definitely recommend Barton Cottage for both couples and families, it has everything one need's for a comfortable and relaxing stay whilst in a great location with many places to visit just a short drive away. Response: I'm glad you enjoyed your stay at Barton Cottage. I agree it is an art getting any open fire going, you need newspaper or firelighters, kindling, small wood blocks and a plan !, I agree the fire logs are much easier and we always use them now when we go. Hope to welcome you again, thanks for your kind words. |
