The West Country / Dorset region

Dorset is famous for the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, which features landforms such as Lulworth Cove, the Isle of Portland, Chesil Beach and Durdle Door, as well as the holiday resorts of Bournemouth, Poole, Weymouth, Swanage, and Lyme Regis.

Dorset is the principal setting of the novels of Thomas Hardy, who was born near Dorchester. The county has a long history of human settlement and some notable archaeology, including the hill forts of Maiden Castle and Hod Hill.

Bournemouth area

The area has become a fashionable and popular part of Bournemouth with a unique mix of clothing shops, cafes, restaurants and many other independent businesses.

Westbourne has a reputation for being the fashion district of Bournemouth, which is supported by the many boutiques and home interior shops located in the main shopping area. The main high street of Westbourne includes a Victorian covered shopping arcade. On March 13th 2007 a large M&S Simply Food replaced the Waitrose store which has recently moved to the Upper Parkstone area of Poole.

Until it was closed in 1965, Westbourne had a train station known as Bournemouth West Station Terminus. The station was often very busy during the summer seasons, as it was a main disembarkation point for holidaymakers to Poole and Bournemouth.

The subarea known as Alum Chine provides a pathway to the award winning beaches featuring a number of seafront restaurants & cafes along with secluded streches of private beach.

Westbourne is situated just minutes outside Bournemouth Town Centre featuring some of the Souths best attractions, shows & nightlife.

Cycling and sightseeing options are found in the New Forest National Park situated 15 mins drive from Bournemouth offering unsurpassed natural beauty and wildlife.

Or why not take a ride on an open top bus to visit the famous 'Millionaires Row' in Sandbanks with the beachfront mansions and yachts, and take the chain ferry and cycle across to the sleepy town of Swanage where the beach life meets the countryside.

In the evening there is an abundance of restaurants, bars and theatre shows in the area to keep all ages and tastes entertained, and you can dance the night away at one of the many nightclubs scattered around the town.

One thing for sure is that you will never be short of things to do!

Why not visit www.bournemouth.co.uk or www.pooletourism.co.uk for inspiration - the options are endless!
