The West Country / Dorset region
Dorset is famous for the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, which features landforms such as Lulworth Cove, the Isle of Portland, Chesil Beach and Durdle Door, as well as the holiday resorts of Bournemouth, Poole, Weymouth, Swanage, and Lyme Regis. Dorset is the principal setting of the novels of Thomas Hardy, who was born near Dorchester. The county has a long history of human settlement and some notable archaeology, including the hill forts of Maiden Castle and Hod Hill. Bournemouth lies in the heart of Dorset on the south coast.
Bournemouth is a “shoppers paradise” with most of the town centre being pedestrianised and offering shops, boutiques, beauty salons, restaurants, cafes and coffee shops, perfect for some well deserved retail therapy. In the evening there is a real buzz in Bournemouth, the town is renowned for being a stylish evening out with over 250 restaurants to chose from, and if its a cocktail or a glass of wine and some dancing you are in the mood for then you truly are spoilt for choice -there's a whole host of bars, nightclubs, pubs and wine bars on offer.
The breathtaking Dorset coastline offers everything from picturesque harbours, long sandy beaches, dramatic cliff top formations, hidden coves and rock pools.
The Jurassic Coast is England's only natural World Heritage Site, and is a walker's paradise. Of equal appeal to the walker is the New Forest, England's newest National Park, but steeped in history.
Poole Harbour is a stunning location for all types of watersport. The harbour and it's islands offer a haven for wildlife including the bird sanctuary on the world renowned Brownsea Island.
