The West Country region

Dorset is a very popular holiday destination all year round. It offers beautiful rolling countryside and the Purbecks. Bournemouth with its award winning beaches and The New Forest nearby. Southampton, Salisbury and Stonehenge are all within reasonable travelling distance. Bournemouth has excellent facilities for the tourists and the town and has a lovely calm multi-racial community.

Dorset features some excellent museums, with world leading centres at Bovington (The Tank Museum, telling the history of military vehicles), and the Russell Cotes Museum and Art Gallery in Bournemouth. Other museums include the Dorset County Museum in Dorchester, The Red House in Christchurch, the Royal Signals Museum at Blandford, and the award winning Brewers Quay in Weymouth. Many smaller towns have their own local museums.

Bournemouth

Southbourne is a suburb of Bournemouth. It is the most easterly part of the borough, between Boscombe and Christchurch, whilst still being a distinct seaside resort suburb within Bournemouth. The resort has superb sandy beaches, a very popular children's play park on the cliff top, cafes, fabulous views sweeping from the Isle of Wight across Poole Bay to the Isle of Purbeck, a shopping centre, pubs and restaurants.

The main area of Southbourne is Southbourne Grove, a long shopping street that has some unique and individual shops rather than high street chain shops. Shops include a butcher, a bakery, numerous cafés, hairdressers, convenience stores, homewares, gift shops and the post office.

Further along towards Hengistbury Head is Southbourne Crossroads. At this crossroads are a public house, a surf shop, a café, hairdressers and news agent. For activity in the local area Seafield Gardens, which has held the prestigious Green Flag Award since 2001, offers bowls, tennis and features a watertower. One tourist feature of Southbourne is the Fisherman's Walk Cliff Railway, a funicular railway between the clifftop coastal road and the promenade and beach. This provides very easy access to Southbourne's Blue Flag beach, from which it is possible to reach the beaches at Boscombe and Bournemouth.

Southbourne is still a popular area for tourists keen to escape the busier areas of Bournemouth town centre. The easternmost part of the area is called Hengistbury Head. The land train runs across Hengistbury Head from the bus terminus to the beach. There is a golf course here and kite flying is a very popular activity with championship flying all year round. There is a mainline railway station at Pokesdown.

Southbourne is busy but being apart from central Bournemouth it offers a more peaceful holiday environment as you would expect. The local sand spit has a cafe and the passenger boat ferry plies across to Mudeford where there are family holiday attractions and facilities.
