It is a very short walk to the zig-zag paths, for access to the clean, sandy beaches, and there are local shops nearby. A short walk along the clifftop will lead you to the Funicular Victorian cliff lift which can take you down to the sandy shores below. Café Riva is a cliff top café serving food and beverages or if you can tear yourself from the views a round of crazy golf on the cliff top may suit. Bournemouth town centre is a short drive for those visitors wishing to be involved in the more hustle and bustle of a traditional seaside town. The Victorian Pier and Pleasure Gardens offer entertainment through the season for young and old. The historical centre of Christchurch is also just a short drive away for riverside walks and the Quay. This is a very popular location being right on the cliff top.

The West Country region

Dorset is a very popular holiday destination all year round. It offers beautiful rolling countryside, dramatic scenery, charming market towns, character villages and miles of some of the finest sandy beaches in the UK.

Bournemouth lies to the east of the country and offers seven miles of blue flag beaches. It is near the market town of Christchurch with its 11th century Priory Church, ruined castle and Saxon mill, and the stunning medieval New Forest.

The area caters for diverse interests – the popular buzzing beach resort in Bournemouth with its vibrant nightlife; the gentler pursuits of walking, wildlife and bird-watching in the nature reserves and national parks, and along the 20 miles of Bournemouth Coast footpath; and active pursuits such as cycling, sailing, rowing, canoeing, windsurfing, kite-surfing and sea kayaking. Popular also for touring, Southampton, the Isle of Wight, Salisbury and Stonehenge are all within reasonable travelling distance.

Dorset features some excellent museums, with world leading centres at Bovington (The Tank Museum, telling the history of military vehicles), and the Russell Cotes Museum and Art Gallery in Bournemouth. Other museums include the Dorset County Museum in Dorchester, The Red House in Christchurch, the Royal Signals Museum at Blandford, and the award winning Brewers Quay in Weymouth. Many smaller towns have their own local museums.

Bournemouth

Southbourne-On-Sea is a suburb of Bournemouth. It is the most easterly part of the borough, between Boscombe and Christchurch, and provides a more peaceful holiday location away from the busier tourist areas. The resort has superb sandy beaches, safe bathing and a very popular children's play park on the cliff top, fabulous views sweeping from the Isle of Wight across Poole Bay to the Isle of Purbeck, a shopping centre, pubs, cafes and restaurants. One tourist feature is the Fisherman's Walk Cliff Railway, a funicular service between the clifftop coastal road and the promenade and beach. The main area of Southbourne-On-Sea is Southbourne Grove, a long shopping street that has some unique and individual shops rather than high street chains.

Further east are Warren Edge and Solent beaches which are sandy and partially stony. The easternmost part is called Hengistbury Head, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), popular for walking and bird spotting and includes rare plant species. The top of the headland provides beautiful panoramic views of Christchurch Harbour, The Needles on the Isle of Wight and Bournemouth. There is a golf course and open ground popular with kite flyers. A land train runs from the Hiker cafe across Hengistbury Head to Mudeford Spit with its exclusive beach huts. From here, there are passenger ferries to Mudeford and Christchurch.
