The Granary, French's Farm
Barn | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 4
The Granary is a very recent first floor barn conversion on our remote fen farmstead. Next to but not overlooked by our farmhouse, your only neighbours for literally miles will be us. We'll be nearby for information or assistance, but otherwise (almost!) invisible. Enjoy our lovely mature garden by relaxing in a choice of seating areas and playing games such as croquet and boule, or walk along the quiet fen road and look out for wildlife.
Originally a late-18th century grain store, the Granary retains many original features starting with the exterior stone steps taking you up to main door. Inside you'll find the spacious living area with its exposed brick pillars and double height ceiling complete with original beams and trusses. The windows facing west not only give you spectacular views of farmland with distant hills beyond, but also allow terrific sunsets to flood this super living space with pink and gold light. Best enjoyed with a glass of chilled wine!
The lounge area has big comfy sofas with TV/DVD, while the kitchen/dining area is fully equipped - there's even an antique baker's dresser providing interesting and useful storage. Beyond the living area the two cosy, beamed bedrooms both sleep two, one with a double bed and the other with twin/king zip-link beds. The generous fully tiled shower room completes what we hope is a holiday apartment with a difference.
This is the perfect place for a relaxing and peaceful holiday - a quiet, little-known corner of rural England with a variety of landscapes close by (the Fens, the Wolds, and the coast). Four of the England's best cathedrals are within easy driving distance, plus Lincolnshire is famed for its wealth of fabulous churches. There are castles and stately homes, Rutland Water, Barnsdale and Easton walled gardens, cycle trails and adventure playgrounds and golf courses. If this isn't enough, we highly recommend the luxurious Grange Spa (just 10 mins away) for a thorough spoiling!
We offer a very warm welcome to all visitors, especially those from overseas, and will do everything we can to help you make the most from your stay here. As qualified ESOL teachers we can even offer English lessons or simple conversation to help you improve your English in a perfect learning environment!

There is a swing seat for guests to use in a shady spot by the pond, along with a picnic table and chairs which can be moved anywhere. There is plenty of room for games such as croquet, badminton and boules. We have our own private garden in front of our house and will not disturb you, but if you want extra privacy there is an enclosed area with patio for sunbathing and barbeques behind the Granary.
The Granary was always open fronted on ground level (for unloading grain carts!), and this space currently houses a small store room with freezer for guests' use, an open parking area, and a closed garage which we use for storing garden furniture etc. We also have a table tennis table here which can be used under cover or taken outside.
We grow a lot of fruit, and you will be welcome to 'pick your own' during the season. Cherries and raspberries are always favourites, but there are also plums, apples and pears later in the year.

Nearest Post Office and village shop in Morton, 4 miles away. All local pubs do food, plus restaurants and take-aways in Bourne.
Important: Definitely NO SMOKING in the Granary or the garden.
The Heart of England/Peak District
On the very edge of the Lincolnshire fens, we enjoy the huge skies and flat fenland landscape, but are also only minutes from our village on the edge of the "Kesteven Uplands", which gently rise from 0m (where we are!) to 130m at Colsterworth on the A1.
These uplands feature many interesting old stone villages such as Castle Bytham, Irnham and Grimsthorpe, which contrast greatly with the more recent (17th century!) redbrick villages of the fens. The whole area is full of history, for example the first bridge on our road crosses the Car Dyke, which was a canal built by the Romans and ran from Cambridge to Lincoln.
Day trips to Lincoln, the Wolds and the coast are favourites of ours, but then we also enjoy going to Cambridge or taking the train to London - we can be at Kings Cross station in the centre of London in around 2 hours (depending on the traffic to Peterborough!).
Peterborough, just 24 miles away, boasts one of the country's finest cathedrals, hidden just off the main shopping street, plus it also has a multi-screen cinema, ten-pin bowling, ice skating and even greyhound racing! Nearer to home, historic Stamford is the most beautiful stone-built town with excellent shopping streets threaded by narrow alleyways, and a lively Friday market. Amazing Burghley house (built by Queen Elizabeth the First's Treasurer) is just outside Stamford, and so too is the Tolthorpe open-air Shakespeare theatre.
Dunsby is a tiny village of around 100 inhabitants, with just 43 houses, a church and village hall. All the neighbouring villages have pubs and most do good food. Our favourite pub serves large portions, and also has a folk night twice a month if you fancy a lively song-session!
Our nearest town is Bourne which has the usual 3 supermarkets plus good independent butchers, wholefoods and an excellent patisserie. The are several restaurants and take-aways, friendly pubs and coffee shops. The leisure centre has a fitness gym and excellent pool for both lane swimming and family sessions with beach-type shallow end, waves and flume. There is also has a peaceful park with tree lined walks, pool and a heritage museum celebrating the lives of Fred Worth (originator of Parisienne haute couture, 1857) and Raymond Mays (racing driver and co-founder of ERA & BRM motors). Bourne's major asset, however, is its ancient 400 acre wood with many paths, both surfaced and muddy, and a 5km family cycle trail.
Bourne BRM 9th Classic car show 22nd June 2014.
Burghley Horse Trials are an annual major attraction in this area - held from 4th - 7th Sept 2014.
Also Egleton Bird Fair at Rutland Water is growing in popularity, held on 15th to 17h August 2014, it's been called the Birdwatchers Glastonbury!
The traditional Spalding Flower Parade is no more, but in its place will be a Peoples Parade and Flower Show to be held on May 3rd 2014. Spalding is well worth a visit, and you can take the water taxi for a short cruise to Springfields Showground and Gardens.
