The Centre region
Ther Loire area is renowned for its châteaux, and its wine growing. The local town of Bourgueil is 10 miles away with its shops and restaurants, it also has a cinema and ice rink. There are several restaurants and bars, along with a hypermarket on the outskirts of the town. There are numerous vineyards around the area where local wines can be sampled and purchased. There is also a street market in Bourgueil every Tuesday. A little further afield is Chinon, famous for its wine and also its Royal fortress which is well worth a visit. There are also some excellent restaurants in the town, and many vineyards in the surrounding area. The world renowned château at Villandry famous for its geometric gardens is within an hours drive. Visit the Troglodyte caves scattered around the area, or spend the day visiting Saumur, famous for its wine as well as its rich history. The city of Tours (35km) is well worth a visit, with its cathedral, and all modern amenities to hand. Futuroscope is 1.5 hours drive away on the outskirts of Poitiers, and is a great attraction for children of all ages. Why not take time to visit L'abbaye de Fontevraud where Robert d'Abrissel a preacher originally from Brittany, founded a mixed community under the rule of women in 1101? Richard the Lion Heart was buried there alongside his father, Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine. This is now on the UNESCO World Heritage List of the Loire Valley.
The immediate area around the Gîte is mainly farmland, with cereal crops, and cattle farming. Apple orchards are abundant, and pears are also grown, making this an important local industry. Hunting and fishing are local pastimes, along with horse riding and other country pursuits.
There are Golf courses within 30 minutes drive, and there is a lake with a steam train that runs throughout the Holiday season a mere 15 minutes drive away in Rillé, fun for all the family.
The local château at Gizeux, 2km away, is open to the public during the holiday season and hosts several village events during August. The most memorable is the local fête.
What is most striking is the peace and quiet but you know that if you want to be entertained that you can very soon find lots to do. This really is a place to get away from it all and feel totally relaxed.

"Great Gite in Lovely Setting"
We were a party of eight, four adults, two teenagers and two young children. We initially booked the property as it ticked all the boxes. It had plenty of space inside and out, a great pool and games for the kids.
We arrived around 9pm after a long journey, but were warmly welcomed by Christopher and Linda. They showed us around and everything looked great. We were lucky that the weather was just right for most of the week and we were able to eat lunch and dinner on the terrace when we wanted to.
The pool was new and great for our party. The young boys could play in the shallower end, whilst we could swim in the deep end. The temperature of the pool was spot on all week.
We have been to the Loire before and it is a great place. We went to the ZooParc de Beavul which was amazing. We also went to the local street market at Bougueil which is held on a Tuesday and is nothing like you get in England. It is well worth a morning visit.
Overall a top holiday in a super Gite.
It was a pleasure to meet you and your family. We are very pleased that you enjoyed your holiday in our gîte and that you found plenty to do in the local area. Thank you for leaving our gîte so clean and tidy.
